Artie Billings

March 30, 2007

Artie Billings, affectionately called "Miss Artie," 80, of Rockwood, passed away March 30, 2007. Funeral services were conducted April 2 at First Baptist Church of Rockwood, with the Rev. James Hutson officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the Roane Memorial Gardens in Rockwood.

Mrs. Billings was a member of First Baptist Church, Rockwood. She was co-owner of Bill Billings Photo, the manager of Rockwood Beach from 1951-1963, and an avid golfer.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Carolyn Billings of Rockwood; daughter and son-in-law, Abbie Billings and Abdellah Cherkaoul of Paris, France; and sister and brother-in-law, Bea and Fletcher Parrish of Yuma, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Billings; parents, Sedley and Nancy Lowe; son, Jeff Billings; and sister, Faye Harvey.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Youth Ministry or Lottie Moon.

Evans Mortuary in Rockwood is in charge of the arrangements.



Ann Dodge

April 21, 1915 — March 13, 2007

Ann (Elliott) Dodge, 91, of Crossville, passed away March 13, 2007. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at First Baptist Church in Crossville.

Mrs. Dodge was born April 21, 1915, in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Emerson and Mary Jane (Campbell) Elliott.

She was retired from General Motors and attended First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sisters-in-law, Martha Elliott of Crossville and Wanda Elliott of Pontiac, MI; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ross Dodge; sister, Jean Roberts; and brothers, Harold Campbell Elliott, Ross Elliott, Stewart Elliott and Leonard Elliott.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the First Baptist Church building fund, 712 S. Main St., Crossville, TN 38555.

Charlotte D. Doubleday

June 9, 1914 — March 26, 2007

Charlotte Donaldson Doubleday passed away March 26, 2007. A memorial and inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a time to be determined.

Mrs. Doubleday was born June 9, 1914, in Mt. Clemens, MI, the daughter of Harry S. and Bessie M. Donaldson.

She met and married her husband, Daniel, in 1935, and spent the following years sharing his service in the military. After retiring to Ft. Walton Beach, FL, they moved to Crossville eight years ago.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Dr. Thomas Krueger of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Nan Doubleday of Crossville; grandsons, Michael Doubleday of Macon, GA and Paul Krueger of Denver, CO; granddaughters, Deborah Dewey of Dallas, TX and Sheri Spivey of Cary, NC; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Campbell Doubleday, M/G USAF Retired; and granddaughter, Cathy Doubleday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Lung Association.

Rita J. Gillis

Nov. 9, 1922 — March 19, 2007

Rita Jean (Snyder) Gillis, 84, of Fairfield Glade, passed away March 19, 2007. A memorial service was held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church March 23, with the Rev. Thomas Moser and Deacon Keith Farber officiating.

Mrs. Gillis was born Nov. 9, 1922, in Zanesville, OH, the daughter of James Theodore and Lucille Faye (Pearson) Snyder.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Fairfield Glade.

Before retiring with her husband to Fairfield Glade, she volunteered for over 35 years as a member of two hospital ladies auxiliaries. First for over 15 years at Bethesda Hospital in Zanesville and then for over 20 years at Blanchard Valley Hospital after moving to Findlay, OH, in 1964.

Shortly after the Gillises moved to Fairfield Glade, Mrs. Gillis, with several others, started the Historical Society of Fairfield Glade. For nearly 20 years, she served as president and was active in planning monthly day trips to places of interest in Tennessee. She secured reservations, located interesting places to eat, wrote an article for the paper and distributed directions for each trip.

The highlight of her tenure was the Fourth of July parade held in the Glade for five years. It was attended by hundreds of people, not only from the Glade, but from Crab Orchard and Crossville as well. She was also a charter member of The Partridges Golf League, as well as several bridge groups. She frequently brought something she was knitting for one of her three grandchildren, and in later years, for her eight great-grandchildren.

She was a "people person." Her energy, enthusiasm and thoughtfulness will be missed.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Roderick Daniel Gillis of Fairfield Glade; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Jim Robertson of Findley, OH; and grandchildren, Jamie and Betsy Robertson of Findley, OH, Kevin and Anita Robertson of Rocky River, OH and Elisabeth and Craig Bova of Summerville, SC.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of Cumberland County, 30 E. Adams St., Crossville, TN 38555, or Hospitality House, 210 W. Tenth Ave., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

John R. Lowe

Sept. 20, 1915 — March 28, 2007

John Richard Lowe, 91, of Crossville, passed away March 28, 2007. A graveside service was held March 30 at Crossville City Cemetery.

Mr. Lowe was born Sept. 20, 1915, in Crossville, the son of Jim and Lacie (Vanwinkle) Lowe.

He was a member of World Wide Church of God.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Betty Lee (Talton) Lowe of Crossville; and sister, Mary Feinstein of Martinez, CA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Eva Jane Smith, Annie May Lowe, Nancy Belle Burgess, Lena Gertrude Norris and Lacie Edna Ruth Harrison; and brothers, William Henry Lowe, Lawrence Lee Lowe, James Arthur Lowe, Carrol Raymond Lowe, Benjamin Franklin Lowe and Thomas Murray Lowe.

Pallbearers were Jackie Burgess, Michael Burgess, Terry D. Irvin, Douglas Burgess, David Lineberger and Charles Cline.

Myrtle C. Ray

March 29, 2007

Myrtle C. Ray, 86, of Franklin, passed away March 29, 2007. Funeral services were conducted April 2 at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home of Franklin, with John Gardner officiating. Interment will be held at noon CDT April 3 in Spring City Memorial Gardens, Spring City.

Mrs. Ray was a member of Clearview Baptist Church and Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her daughter, Ann (Marcus) Dotson of Franklin; grandchild, Gary (Melissa) Dotson; and great-grandchildren, Jacob and Matt Dotson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Euless Ray.

Honorary pallbearers were the Clarion Sunday school class.

Williamson Memorial Funeral Home of Franklin was in charge of the arrangements.
