A Crossville man was seriously injured last Wednesday when he lost an arm in a mowing accident just outside the city limits, according to reports. He died at a regional trauma center on Sunday.

Van S. Walker, 79, of Oak Dr., was reportedly mowing an open area at his home on a lawn tractor when he apparently fell from the machine and was run over, with the mower amputating his right arm, according to Deputy Jerry Jackson's report.

The Cumberland County Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services ambulance responded to the scene and a landing zone was established for a helicopter to pick up the patient and fly him to The University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Walker was well known in the community and was a retired colonel in the United States Air Force. He was a veteran of WWII and served as a combat pilot in England and northern France during the war.
