Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department is warning citizens of persons makeing phone calls, claiming to represent Volunteer Energy Co-op, claiming an electric bil is past due.

They tell the resident receiving the call that if an electric bill is not paid, power service will be discontinued. The caller then leaves an out-of-state phone number for the resident to call back so that instructions on where to send money can be passed on.

Volunteer Electric does not collect bills this way. If anyone has questions regarding their electric bill, they are urged to call the local VED office at 484-3527.

“Know who you are talking to before you send money,” Sheriff’s Lt. Gary Howard said. “Never wire money to anyone unless you are 100 percent sure of who you are sending the money to.”
