An investigation on-going since May that escalated with the theft of nearly an $80,000 check has resulted in the grand jury indictment against a Cumberland County man on theft and forgery charges.

Walter Peter Sauvan Jr., 38, 1144 Pugh Rd., was indicted last week on a charge of theft more than $60,000 and on four counts of forgery and four counts of passing a forged instrument.

The victim was identified in Crossville Police offense reports as his father, Walter P. Sauvan Sr.

The indictments charge that Sauvan Jr. forged nearly $1,000 in checks on his father's checking account in May.

A separate indictment charges that Sauvan Jr. took a $78,000 settlement check that arrived in his father's name and later took it to a local bank, cashing it and keeping all but $6,000 that was placed in a bank account.

Sauvan Jr. is to appear in Cumberland County Criminal Court for arraignment Monday.
