A vehicle parked after hours in a local convenience store parking lot attracted the attention of a Cumberland County sheriff's deputy who recovered a stolen rifle and arrested the two occupants, according to reports.

Charged with theft of property and unlawful possession of a weapon is Edward Junior Sherrill, 39, 328 Doris Dr. Bond was set at $1,250 and he is to appear in Cumberland County General Sessions Court on Monday. Also charged is Krista Renee Brown, 25, 328 Doris Dr. She is charged with theft of property, was placed under $250 bond and also is to appear in court Monday.

Deputy Roy Phipps wrote in his report he was on routine patrol when he happened upon a vehicle in the parking lot of Sunoco Market on Plateau Rd. at 3:16 a.m. Friday. The business was closed the vehicle had an expired tag, the deputy reported.

During a routine check for weapons Phipps reported finding a loaded rifle clip in Sherrill's pocket, resulting in the discovery of a .22 caliber Mossberg semi-automatic rifle from the pickup. The weapon was loaded, according to Phipps' report.

A computer check on the weapon revealed it has been reported stolen in Fentress County. The two occupants were then taken into custody and placed under arrest.
