About 9,000 Volunteer Energy Cooperative customers lost power Tuesday morning when two transmission poles were broken, VEC reported.

The transmission poles serve the Lantana and Crab Orchard areas. VEC crews responded to the outage and had restored power to the Lantana area around noon, and expected power to be restored to Crab Orchard by 1 p.m.

The schools in the affected areas continued to hold classes, and the food and nutrition program served sack lunches to the children.

Robert McCarty, VEC communications coordinator, said, "We are very sorry for any inconveniences the outages have caused."

VEC believes the poles were broken by high wind.
