The Cumberland Art Society Backdoor Gallery will feature Claudia Spires and Helen Furcean during the month of October. Located at 186 S. Walnut Ave., Cookeville, the exhibit will open Oct. 7 with a reception from 1-4 p.m., and continue through Oct. 28. Both artists are multi-media talented and specialize in watercolor and colored pencil.

Spires specializes in watercolor and does some acrylics. Mostly self-taught, she has taken several workshops and classes and has excelled under the direction of Romola Drost. She creates colorful landscapes, still life and animals.

Furcean excels in colored pencil and has done oil, acrylics and watercolor. She prefers people and buildings in her artwork. She was a graphic artist for suburban newspapers for 35 years. After retiring she began to concentrate on her own art interests.

The combination of art styles and subjects should make for an interesting exhibit. Some of the Spires' paintings can be seen on the "featured artists" section at Open hours are Monday-Friday, noon to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 1-4 p.m. For more information, call the art center at (931) 526-2424 or e-mail
