Matthew Cantrell

Crossville Chronicle, Crossville, TN

Jack Bittle, president of the Crossville Carving Club, presented Matthew Cantrell with a cane as part of the "Operation Eagle Cane Project." This project began in Oklahoma, and has grown nationwide with woodcarving clubs.

Bittle carved the eagle head from bass wood and the cane is engraved with Cantrell's name, Semper Fi, and the date of his injury, 10/13/05. David Rutledge, owner of Stagecoach Gifts, donates his time and expertise to engrave the canes used. The cane was presented to him at his father's house in Crossville on Oct. 4.

The Crossville Carving Club will carve and donate canes to any veteran wounded during or after the Gulf War. If you know of someone who should receive a cane, call Everett Elkins at 788-5329.
