The Knights of Columbus and Hilltoppers, Inc. have partnered for many years in support of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Truly living out their motto, these gentleman have been knights by the side of Hilltoppers, Inc. as they fulfill their mission.
On Monday, March 19, 2012, the Knights visited Hilltoppers, Inc. to present checks designated for replacing exterior doors and windows at the Mickey Thompson Court apartment complex. A check in the amount of $5,695 was presented to Hilltoppers, Inc. Executive Director Jeanene Houston by Grand Knight Walt Peterson (at right of Houston) and Fred Laufenberg, (far right) director of the MR Foundation of Tennessee, Inc. They were joined by Art Albert, (far left) and Vince D’Alessandro, (next to Houston). A second check of $3,623 – the 10 percent local match required before receiving funds for a T-Dot vehicle – was also presented to Jeanene Houston by the Knights. The money will be applied towards three new vehicles: two of them are lift-equipped to accommodate wheelchairs, and the third is a conversion van.
You may have seen the Knights with their collection jars in front of area grocery and discount department stores. These Tootsie Roll drives, as they’ve come to be known, are responsible for raising much of the funds that eventually make their way to nonprofits such as Hilltoppers, Inc. Other funds are generously donated by companies such as VEC. Thank you for making this success possible. This summer, the Knights will be collecting on July 27 and 28, and August 4 and 5 in front of Food City, Kroger, Wal-Mart and K-Mart. When you see them, the Knights hope you’ll again be generous as you give to support a worthy cause.
