Spring is supposed to be upon us – the Masters is underway which is a certain sign of spring! All is ready for the 7th annual running of the POETS Spring Invitational – the first major event of the Fairfield Glade 2011 golf season. As always, the event will involve a good mixture of locals and out of town guests. Joining Cumberland Eye Care this year as a major sponsor is Crossville Ford/Lincoln –Mr. Talley Ridley general sales manager!

This year’s event will have a few minor changes but the tried and true collection of four different 9 hole formats will remain:

CRAG front nine (Friday April 15) — two man scramble(Team net)

CRAG back nine (Friday April 15) — Alternate shot (Chapman)-Team net

BRAE front nine (Saturday April 16) — Better Ball partner (net)

BRAE back nine (Saturday April 16) — both Balls (net)

New this year will be the use of a crossover start using both #1 and #10 starting tees both days. There will be a morning “wave” starting at 7:30 and an afternoon “wave” starting at 11:30! A full field of 72 teams (144 players) will be arranged in nine different flights of handicapped teams. In addition to flight win, place and show prizes, there will be gross and net skins, closest to the pin prizes, low gross team winner, and of course the very much coveted “POETS Plaque” awarded to the overall winning team ! Defending champs from the Fall 2010 event are Denny Lown and Mike OHara.

The festivities “kick off” with the Thursday afternoon (2 p.m.) official putting contest — with over $900 in prizes to be awarded. All players are entered in the putting contest this year! Following the final putt off — a mandatory player’s meeting (5 p.m.) will be held to brief all players on local rules and format details. An informal burgers and beer dinner on the Heatherhurst veranda will follow.

Special activities will be conducted in order to provide incentives for the overall winner of the event! The two professional teams (Steve Kraft/Warren Huddleston, Jeremy Jones/Jeff Houston) will also be playing against old man par!
