LOCAL VIDEO: Stage is set for elementary hoops championships Tuesday

The Homestead Lady Bulldogs defeated the Crab Orchard Lady Tigers, defending county champs, Saturday in the division finals of the elementary basketball tournament. Final score of the contest was Homestead 33, Crab Orchard 30. For video highlights, CLICK HERE.



The Crab Orchard Tigers dominated the division championship against North Cumberland Elementary, winning 61 to 18. For video highlights, CLICK HERE.



The Brown Bears took the western division championship in a 36-32 win over the Pleasant Hill Hornets Saturday night. For video highlights, CLICK HERE.



The South Cumberland Lady Rebels won the western division championship over the Pleasant Hill Lady Hornets Saturday in a 33-29 victory. For video highlights, CLICK HERE.



The 2008 Cumberland County elementary basketball tournament entered the semifinal round Monday, with the championship games slated Tuesday at Cumberland County High School, after playing its first two rounds at both CCHS and Stone Memorial High School over the weekend.

After fifth-seed Pine View defeated the fourth-seeded North Lady Patriots Thursday night 32-31 and the fourth-seeded Stone Coyotes defeated fifth seed Pine View 49-10 at SMHS, semi-final action and championship round play concluded Friday and Saturday at both high schools.

The defending champion Brown Bears defeated Pleasant Hill 36-32 Saturday night to claim the western division championship, while the South Lady Rebels defeated the Pleasant Hill Lady Hornets 33-29 for the girls' crown.

The Homestead Lady Bulldogs defeated defending champion Crab Orchard 33-30 for the western division girls' crown, while the Crab Orchard Tigers bit the North Patriots 61-18 for the boys title.

All eight teams advanced to the semi-final round round last night at CCHS. With the winners playing in the championship games tonight, beginning at 6 p.m.

Eastern division

Homestead 33, Crab Orchard 30: Casey Swafford and Nichole Hassler tallied 15 and 13 points, respectively, to lead the Lady Bulldogs over the Lady Tigers.

“We played well. They’re a great team,” said Homestead Coach Janet Turner.

Kayla Daniells and Ashley Cox led the Lady Tigers with 13 points each.

The game was tied 23-23 after three quarters, but the Lady Bulldogs outscored Crab Orchard 10-7 in the final quarter for the victory. A trey by Hassler put the Lady ‘Dawgs ahead 29-27, which keyed a 7-3 run in the final minute to secure the win.

Crab Orchard (30): Bowman 2, H. Brady 2, A. Cox 13, Daniell 13, Fraga 0.

Crab Orchard 61, North 18: Brock Rowan tallied 12 points on four treys to lead the Tigers over the Patriots.

Justin Simmons led North with eight markers.

Crab Orchard opened the game with a 12-0 run to take a 21-3 lead after one quarter and never looked back, building a 43-15 lead at the break and outscoring the Patriots 18-3 in the second half for the victory.

Brandon Hawkins-Clark led Pleasant Hill with 16 points.

The Bears led 15-9 at the break, but three technical fouls on the Bears allowed the Hornets to outscore the Bears 13-6 in the third quarter to take a 23-21 lead.

Brown outscored Pleasant Hill 15-10 in the final quarter for the victory.

South led 28-25 with 2:01 left in the contest, but a trey by Green would tie the game at 28-28.

The Lady Rebels took a 30-28 lead with 1:03 on a layup by Lauren Sliger, but the Lady Hornets would miss a go-ahead trey with 50 seconds left.

South would hit three of six free throws in the last 1:03 to seal the victory.

Pleasant Hill (29): Green 15, Iles 2, Graham 5, Noel 7, Ryenolds 0.

South (33): Vaden 13, Spitler 1, Rector 2, Bridges 2, Griswold 1.

Pleasant Hill 37, Martin 22: Tori Noel tickled the twine for 14 points, and Dimi Iles added 10 points to lead the Lady Hornets over the Lady Eagles.
