Lady Panther wrestlers take fifth in state invitational

CROSSVILLE — The Lady Panther wrestling team traveled to the Williamson County Ag Center in Franklin to compete in the girls state tournament Feb. 15-16.

After qualifying all three girls who entered the East Tennessee Regional Tournament. Angel Feeler, Madison Finley and Laura Napier represented SMHS very well.

As a team, they finished fifth overall behind four teams that filed nearly all of the 10 girls weight classes.

Angel Feeler went 2-2 and finished in third place. She came into the tournament wrestling the best she has in the two years she has been wrestling. She has made great strides from where she was last year when she went 0-11 as a first year wrestler. This year she went 12-11 wrestling a large percentage of girls above her normal weight class.

"I could not be more proud of her effort. She has been a real joy to coach each day,” said head girls Coach Matt Bates. "She has become a real technician on some of the more difficult techniques and that has really paid off for her in win/loses this year.”

Madison Finley finished second in the state. The lone senior on the squad added to her trophy shelf where she already had a third place and second place finish at state in 2010 and 2011.

Finley leaves the Lady Panther Program as the career leader in wins, pins in a season, and most state medals.

“Madison has had a solid year for us. She went 11-2 with both loses very closes to the same girl. She actually beat her twice, so they split 2-2 on the year," Bates said.

Laura Napier finished one match away from placing as a freshman.

“I could not be more proud of her! She gave up 20-25 pounds almost every time that she went out there. She is a real fighter,” Coach Bates added.

She went 8-12 on the season and is on a good pace to break the Lady Panther career win total set by Madison Finley this season at 28 wins.

“Overall I could not be more pleased. I really wanted to steal fourth place from Cookeville, but in the end we came up one win short. We had a great year, and I look forward to getting a couple people back healthy. I think we can make another run for the top two or three,” Bates said.
