Burgin wins Tennessee professional championship

CROSSVILLE — Two Cumberland County golf professionals from the 45th Tennessee Professional Championship qualified for the 2014 Professional National Championship at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, SC, on June 22-25, according to the Tennessee PGA.

Bear Trace Cumberland Mountain pro Kelvin Burgin won the weather-plagued tournament at Westhaven Golf Club in Franklin with a six-under-par 210 (68-70-72) to join Golf Capital Learning Center pro Greg Wyatt in the National Tournament next summer. Wyatt finished fifth at one-under-par 215 (67-74-74).

This is the fourth Tennessee Professional Championship for Burgin who won three straight titles from 2006-'08. He also earns a berth in the 2014 St. Jude Classic in Memphis.

Wyatt played in three Northeast Regional Professional Championships with pros from New York, Indiana and Michigan, but never qualified for the national tournament. This will be his first.

Richard Rebne of Ringgold, GA, Johan Kok of Brentwood, Jared Melson of Tullahoma and Jared Jones of Nashville also qualify for the Professional National Championship. Jones won the sixth spot in a sudden death playoff with Brock Shafer of  Olive Branch, MS.

Burgin and Wyatt came back at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday morning to complete their second round, as the tournament was plagued by inclement on Tuesday. When play was suspended on Tuesday, Burgin and Wyatt were on the eighth green and had to play 28 1/2 holes Wednesday.

According to Burgin Thursday morning, those players who completed their second round Tuesday started the third round at 8:15 a.m. Those players who had to finish their second round received an hour or so break before starting their final round.

Wyatt shot a five-under-par 67 to lead Burgin by one stroke after Monday's first round, while Rebne and Melson each shot even par 72.

Burgin's second round 70 gave him a two shot lead over Melson and a three-shot advantage over Wyatt, who was paired with Burgin in the final two rounds. Burgin, Kok and Wyatt all finished with even par 72 on Wednesday, while Rebne shot a two-under-par 70 to take second place.
