New location announced for Wellness Express Fitness 5K Fun Run, One-Mile Walk set Sept. 7

CROSSVILLE — The Wellness Express 5K Fitness Fun Run/Walk, sponsored by Cumberland Medical Center and the CMC Wellness Complexes at Crossville and Fairfield Glade, is back after a one-year break. It will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, at a new location — Miller By-Pass and Dayton Rd. to Peavine Rd. The start/finish area is in the area of Dr. Shada's office.

The post-Labor Day event will benefit the Cumberland County Cardiac Support Group.

Previously held in historic downtown Crossville, the race is being moved to provide a more challenging course.

It will begin on Miller By-Pass at Dayton Rd. and run west toward Peavine Rd. and the U.S. 70 intersection, about one-quarter mile from the Peavine Rd. and I-40 exit.

“The new route is more rural — rolling hills — compared to the relatively flat terrain of the downtown course,” said Dee Dee Kuenzer, program manager of the Crossville Wellness Complex.

The Cumberland County Cardiac Support Group will be the official host for the event which includes the 5k run or walk for individuals and teams and a one-mile family walk. Proceeds beyond covering the cost of staging the event will be used for the Cumberland County Cardiac Support Group ongoing  community programs.

“The goal of the sponsoring organizations is to encourage health improvement through physical activity,” Kuenzer said.

The event is open to runners or walkers of all ages, up to and including those who are more than 80.  Awards will be given in more than 20 age categories, Kuenzer said.

“We’re announcing the event well in advance, so those who think they can run  or walk a 5K (3.1 mile) race, but haven’t participated in any running or walking events this summer, can begin training for the event,” she said.

“We would encourage potential participants, who are not members of the CMC Wellness Complexes in Crossville or Fairfield Glade, to visit either of our facilities and look over our training equipment and join us to prepare for the event,” she said.

“Running or walking a 5K is not something to attempt without some training, but thousands of persons do it every year in the U.S.” she said.

“The one-mile family walk event does not require any significant training,” she said.  “Virtually anyone can participate, and we would encourage families, including toddlers in strollers, to turn out and walk the marked-off mile."

The Sept. 7 event starts at 9 a.m. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Pre-registration for the event closes Aug. 31, and is available at the Crossville Wellness Complex, 130 Woodmere Mall, and at the Fairfield Glade Wellness Complex, 130 Stonehenge Road, or online.  Cost is $20 per person competing as an individual, or $15 per person competing on a team of five or more.

All pre-registration participants paying the full fee will be given a commemorative T-shirt. Pre-registration is $15 per person without a T-shirt.

Registration after Aug. 31, and on the day of the event, is $25 including the T-shirt, while supplies last.

Chip Timing will be provided by Total Race Solutions of Knoxville.

Awards will be in two tiers and include top overall male and female runner and the top male and female runners in three broad categories: Masters (age 40-49), Grandmasters (age 50-59) and Veterans (age 60-plus).

Awards will also go to the top three males and females, in the following age divisions: 6 and under, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, and 80 and above.

Overall winners are not eligible for awards in specific age divisions.

The team award will be based on cumulative time for the top five team members.

Participants in the one mile family walk will also be timed, and the top five male and top five female walkers will receive awards.
