Panther baseball team falls to Alcoa

CROSSVILLE — The Stone Memorial baseball team was swept by the Alcoa Tornadoes in the opening District 4AA home-and-home series this week. Alcoa won 9-4 at home Wednesday night in a make-up game of the series opener on Monday, after winning 5-3 at SMHS Tuesday night.

Alcoa 9, SMHS 4: The Panthers jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first on a first-pitch homerun by lead-off hitter Jason Moldenhauer, followed by Luke Matthews' double and singles from Nathan Greene and Sawyer Casey for two additional runs.

Moldenhauer scored in the second on a double.Matthews reached on an error, allowing Moldenhaur to score for a 4-0 lead.

Senior catcher Nathan Greene caught five pop flies behind home plate and contributed two hits offensively.  Moldenhauer and Sawyer Casey also hit two for three to lead the Panther offense.

Junior pitcher John Martin held the Tornadoes scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Alcoa  sliced the deficit to 4-2. Martin was relieved in the fourth after three more runs were plated. 

A.J. Tarallo, Clay Wilson and Wayne Burns would all enter the game on the mound, allowing Alcoa to score four more runs in the 9-4 final. Martin suffered the district loss.

Alcoa 5, SMHS 3: Stone Memorial High School hosted the Alcoa Tornados on Tuesday night in their District 4AA opener.  Gabriel Caballero took the mound for the Panthers and suffered his first loss of the season, as the visitors left the Plateau with a 5-2 victory. 

The visitors scored three runs on two hits in the top three innings.  Rayne Bennett entered the game in the top of the fourth and finished finish the game allowing two runs on three hits.

Stone's Jason Moldenhauer continued to wield a hot bat as he went two for three at the plate. Austin Helton, Luke Matthews, A. J. Tarallo, and Caballero each contributed singles in the contest. Moldenhauer and Matthews crossed the plate for the Panthers in the sixth inning, but the home team went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Schedule: Stone hosted Sequoyah Thursday and Rhea County Friday for non-district games.
