CCHS, SMHS split freshmen/ sophomore games Monday

CROSSVILLE — The Cumberland County freshmen basketball teams split a pair of games with Stone Memorial's freshmen/sophomore teams  Monday night at CCHS, as the Lady Jets defeated SMHS 57-33, while the Panthers were victorious 56-40.

CCHS 57, SMHS 33: With the score tied at 5-5, a trey by Lindsey Norrod  triggered a 10-3 run to take a 13-8 advantage. Norrod had five first-qurter points for the Lady Jets who forced several SMHS turnovers during the first eight minutes. Lexi Hinch and Sam Gray each three points for the Lady Panthers.

The Lady Jets outscored the Lady Panthers 13-5 in the second quarter for a 26-13 lead at the break. Hannah Brown had four points for CCHS, while Gray scored all five points for the Lady Panthers.

CCHS opened the second half with a 7-0 to stretch the lead to 33-16, but a trey by Hailey Coudriet stopped the bleeding at 26-16. The Lady Jets finished the stanza with a 12-2 run for a 45-18 by quarter's end.

SMHS outscored CCHS 15-12 in the fourth quarter behind Gray's five points. Lexi Lee and Kali Turbett each scored four points for the Lady Jets.

Leading scorers for CCHS were Klaire Varney (six points), Lindsey Norrod (11 points), Hannah Brown (nine points), Bekah Capps (four points), Sydney Clark (eight points), Bethany Dyer, Lexi Lee (six points), Mattie Hinch (eight points) and Kali Turbett (four points).

Leading scorers for SMHS were Lexi Hinch (five points), Sammy Jo Wyatt, Abigail Stine (two points), Brittany Brun, Hailey Coudriet (eight points), Alison Padgett (three points), Sam Gray (13 points) and Morgan Cox (two points).

SMHS 56, CCHS 40: The Jets jumped out to a 10-5 first quarter advantage behind Kevin Flories' six points, but a trey by Mason Baucom triggered an 8-5 Panther run to take a 16-15 by quarter's end.

SMHS outscored CCHS 17-6 in the second quarter for a 33-21 lead at the break. Baucom had seven points for the Panthers, while Jake Moore had a trey for the Jets.

Each team scored 13 points in the third period, as the visitors built a 46-34 advantage and finished the game with a 10-6 spurt for the final score of 56-40.

Leading the way for the Panthers were Austin Helton (four points), Tristan Norman (eight points), Nathaniel Sexton (two points), Chandler VanNatter (four points), Mason Baucom (19 points), Shade Foster (11 points) and Jamie Nichols (four points).

Statistical leaders for the Jets were Mason Houston (nine points, three rebounds, one assist),  Jake Moore (10 points, four rebounds), Kevin Flores (nine points, one steal), Cason Graham (five points, two rebounds), Tristan Partridge (five points, one assist), Ben Tabor (two points, two rebounds) and Corey Brooks.

Schedule: The CCHS freshmen will host White County Thursday, while SMHS will travel to Warren County Thursday.
