The Stone Memorial Panthers split a pair of District 4AA games with Alcoa Friday night, as the Panthers defeated Alcoa 99-71, while the Lady Panthers were beaten 65-53.
SMHS 99, Alcoa 71: "We played very well. I am very tickled with the way we handled every espect of the game. It was a good team effort," said Panther Coach Neil Capps, whose team improved to 11-7 overall and 3-0 in the district.
"At 3-0 in the district, it puts the bullseye on our back. We must focus harder," he added.
Alcoa and Christian Academy of Knoxville (CAK) are tied for second at 2-1, and face each other tonight at Alcoa. Loudon and Kingston are tied for fourth at 1-2 and play tonight in Kingston, as well. Scott County is 0-3.
Brock Rowan led the Panthers with 36 points, including five three-pointers in the second quarter. He was seven of 11 from three-point range.
Rounding out the scoring were Gage Spence (11 points), Taylor Orme (four points), Brad Smith (one point), Tyler Yoder (18 points), Brandon Thomas (two points), Mitch Ball (two points), Justin Simmons (15 points) and Luke Matthews (10 points).
The Panthers opened the first quarter with a 14-5 run and finished the quarter with a 30-12 advantage, and outscored the Tornadoes 25-13 to take a 55-25 halftime cushion.
Alcoa outscored SMHS 28-19 in the third quarter to slice the lead to 74-53, but the Panthers used a 25-18 fourth quarter for the final margin of 99-71.
With six minutes left in the game, Capps pulled his starters to give his reserves some playing time, and they scored nine points to seal the victory.
Alcoa 65, SMHS 53: The SMHS Lady Panthers trailed 16-11 after the first quarter and 33-24 at the break; however, they outscored Alcoa 17-16 in the third quarter to slice the lead to 49-41. Alcoa finished the game with a 16-12 fourth quarter for the final margin.
According to reports, the Lady Panthers cut the deficit to four points at one stage in the second half, but Alcoa came back to make the final margin 12 points.
Leading the way for the Lady Panthers were Tiffany Cokkinias (three points, three rebounds, three assists, one steal), Jordan Thompson (two rebounds), Emily Bryant (two rebounds), Jacki Livesay (15 points, two rebounds, one assist, one steal), Kirsten Potter (four points, one rebound, one steal), Faith Van Ruden (14 points, two rebounds, one assist, four steals), Abby Griffin, Courtney White (six points, three rebounds, three assists), Sidney Early (two points, one rebound) and Mikayla Kington (nine points, four rebounds).
SMHS was 17 of 47 from the field and 14 of 19 from the free throw line with 20 rebounds, eight assists, seven steals and 18 turnovers.
CAK (3-0) plays at Alcoa (3-0) tonight, while Loudon (1-2) goes to Kingston (1-2). Scott County is 0-3.
