SMHS track teams compete at Tennessee Relays

CROSSVILLE — The SMHS Lady Panthers had another stellar day while the Panthers hammered out a solid day in Knoxville in the Tennessee Relays over the weekend.. The Lady Panthers finished ninth out of the 57 scheduled teams to compete, while the boys took 32nd out of the 57.

Hailey Coudriet set the school record in the 3200-meter race on the way to a seventh-place finish with a time of 11:57. Tiffany Cokkinias broke her school record in the 800-meter open with a time of 2:36.08 that was good enough for 17th place.

For the boys, Brady Wattenbarger had another good day with a discus throw of 130’ 8” which got him seventh place.

“It was a great day in Knoxville. This was a fun and unique event that allowed our kids to compete on one of the biggest and best stages,” said Coach Matt Bates. “I really feel like we responded well to the heat and to the environment. Our kids rose to the challenge and did what we asked them to do.”

Other highlights from the two-day meet include:

•Ethan Pierce in the 100-meter open with a personal best time of 12.09 seconds, and in the 400-meter open with a personal best time of 57.28 seconds

•Jordan Schroeder in the 1,600- meter race with a personal best time of 5:04.18, in the 3,200- meter race he set a personal best also with a time of 11:14.59

•Dawson Hassler also in the 1,600-meter race with a personal best time of 5: 25, in the 3,200- meter race with a time of 11:35.01 also a personal best

•Blu Shillings ran a season best of 44.97 in the 300-meter hurdles

•Lacey Melton in the 100-meter set a personal best time of 14.03 seconds

•Hailey Coudriet in the 1,600-meter race set personal best time of 5:36.02

•Lexi Hinch also set a new personal best in the 1,600- meter race with a time of 6:26.54

•Kailey Priestwood set a new personal best with a time 49.60 in the 300- meter hurdles

•In the 4x800-meter relay the girls ran a 10:44.73 to grab third place.

The Lady Panthers and the Panthers will travel Friday to Walker Valley High School to the prestigious Optimist Meet.

“This becomes the fun part of the season. Now we get to the point were kids have to have certain times and marks to qualify for the meet. The next few weeks heading into sub sectionals will be very challenging but a great time for our kids,” added Bates.

    Two former champions headline the 108-person field for the 16th annual Golf Capital of Tennessee Women's Open hosted by the Tennessee Golf Association July 31-Aug. 2 run at Stonehenge Golf Club in Fairfield Glade. There are 35 professionals and 73 amateurs listed in the tournament pairings released by the Tennessee Golf Association last week.
