Cookeville wins home-and-home series with Jets

CROSSVILLE — The Cookeville Cavaliers swept the home-and-home series with the CCHS  Jets Tuesday night, taking a 13-2 victory to solidify their hold on first place in District 6AAA at 10-0.

Jeremy Haggerty worked four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and one walk to earn the victory, while Brandon Grant allowed one hit in one inning.

Caleb Savage ripped two doubles and a single with one RBI for the Cavs, while Memphis University signee Darian Tubbs smacked two doubles with two RBIs and Jeffrey Riedel belted a single and a three-run homer. Clay Talkington, Alex Dixon and Blake Thurman each poked one hit.

Matt Ledbetter was the losing pitcher, allowing nine runs on six hits with two strikeouts, three walks and two hitbatsmen. Jacob Hayes worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and one hitbatsman, and John Hayes hurled one inning, giving up three runs on two hits with one walk, two strikeouts and one hitbatsman.

Ledbetter led CCHS with two singles, while Tayler Houston smashed a two-run single and Nathaniel Wyatt smacked one single.

Cookeville took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on singles by Savage, Dixon and Thurman, a walk and a couple of passed balls.

The Cavaliers plated eight runs in the top of the third on single by Riedel, two RBI doubles by Savage and one by Tubbs, an error, one walk, a groundout, three hitbatsmen, several passed balls and a couple of stolen bases.

Cookeville's other three runs came on Riedel's three run blast in the top of the fifth inning, after a double by Tubbs and a walk.

Ledbetter led off the bottom of the first with a single and stole second base, but Haggerty retired then next three hitters.

Wyatt led off the second inning with a single and stole second, but, again, Haggerty retired the next three Jets.

CCHS scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to slice the lead to 10-2, when Ryan Burgess reached on an error, Ledbetter walked and both scored on Houston's single.

Wyatt walked to open the fourth, and Ledbetter singled with one out in the fifth, but he was thrown out attempting to swipe second base.

CCHS and SMHS will co-host the second Mountain Man Classic this weekend.
