Last Friday night the SMHS baseball team travelled to South Pittsburg to face the top ten-ranked Pirates. The Panthers came home with a 5-0 win with junior pitcher Clay Wilson notching the shut-out.
Stone scored three runs in the top of the first on walks to Austin Helton and Nathan Greene and doubles by Jason Moldenhauer, Gabriel Cabellero, and another John Martin.
Wilson took the Pirates down in order in their half of the inning.
Austin Robertson walked to start the second inning, and advanced to second on a sacrifice fly from Sawyer Casey, but was stranded.
South Pittsburg's Cooper Lewis singled in the bottom of the second only to be gunned down by catcher Nathan Greene to shortstop A.J. Tarallo. Lane Morrison knocked a single, but was left stranded as the next two Pirates went down in order.
Moldenhauer reached on a single in the top of the third, and scored after Caballero's hit and Martin's sacrifice fly. The Panthers and the Pirates would both be hitless in the fourth and fifth innings.
Wilson scored the Panthers' fifth run on a walk, a wild pitch and Robertson's hit.
South Pittsburg had two base runners in the sixth and seventh, but were stranded by the Panther defense.
Schedule: Stone finished the regular season Monday night with a make-up game against Loudon for senior night and a trip to Cookeville Tuesday evening to face the Cavaliers.
