Lady Panthers post wins in volleyball tournament

CROSSVILLE — The Stone Memorial High School Lady Panther volleball team improved their record to 9-2 overall, after posting a 5-2 record in the White County Tournament over the weekend in Sparta.

SMHS opened the tournament with a 25-17, 25-19 win over McMinn County Friday night. In Saturday's action, they defeated McGavock 27-25, 25-9; Upperman 25-18, 25-9; and Warren County  25-9, 25-17, and lost to Friendship Christian 25-18, 25-15 and Pope John Paul II 25-12 and 26-24.

The  Lady Panthers volleyball team opened District 6AAA play last Thursday with a 3-0 victory over Warren County. SMHS won 25-6, 25-5, 25-11 for their second  home victory.

On Aug. 20 in Gainesboro, Coach Meghan Kunzelman's team defeated Jackson County 12-25, 25-15, 25-23 and Trousdale County 25-20 and 25-16 in non-district affairs.

The Lady Panthers have three matches this week. After hosting Livingston Monday, they hit the road for two matches — Tuesday at Rhea County and Thursday at White County.

    The Cookeville Cavaliers scored seven runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to claim a 7-0 District 6AAA victory over the CCHS Jets Monday night in Cookeville.

    The SMHS Lady Panthers had another stellar day while the Panthers hammered out a solid day in Knoxville in the Tennessee Relays over the weekend.. The Lady Panthers finished ninth out of the 57 scheduled teams to compete, while the boys took 32nd out of the 57.
