On Wednesday night, the Lady Jets soccer team clenched their first win of the season, defeating the White County Lady Warriors 2-1.
"The youthful Lady Jets have been struggling this season, especially earlier in the year. Since the Lady Jets competed in the Lady Cherokee invitational in mid-September, their skill has improved dramatically," said Coach Cub Whitson.
The Lady Jets were competing for a fourth-place seed in district play which starts next week.
"Both teams knew the situation they were in and both attempted to execute game plans. By the end of the half, both teams were dead-locked at 0-0," added Whitson.
Early in the second half, junior Brooke Golden advanced the ball up the field before losing possession, but Balie Houston had her teammate's back and picked up where Golden left off and put the ball in the lower left corner of the White County net.
The Lady Jets continued their momentum with a series of attacks in White County territory, but failed to finish. At the 60 minute mark, the Lady Jet defense was penalized with a hand ball in the box.
White County capitalized on the mistake, getting a goal in on junior keeper Savannah Kerley, who played a great game. The Lady Jets bounced by a few minutes later with a strong attack from Golden. Golden carried up the middle of the field, lost possession, won it back and slid a shot in from the top of the 18.
Unfortunately, even with the win, the Lady Jets will be traveling to White County next Monday to play in the 4/5 game of their district tournament.
Thursday night the Lady Jets hosted Rhea County for senior night. The Lady Jets only have one senior, Mia Mijatovic, "who has been a member of the team all four years and brings a great attitude and commitment to her team. We hope to get a win to send Mia off in good fashion," concluded Whitson.
