More than 1,000 elementary and middle school runners from across the state converged on Knoxville’s Victor Ashe Park Saturday for the State Cross Country Championships.
In the girls’ middle school division, Sydney Tabor (North Cumberland, eighth grade) placed eighth earning All-State distinction. Tabor finished the race with a time of 12:58, despite having lost a shoe along the two-mile course.
Lauren Tabor finished with a time of 13:25, which earned her the 21st spot in the field of 255 runners. Although disappointed that she missed the All-State honors reserved for the top 20 finishers, the North Cumberland sixth grader was one of the youngest athletes in contention and will have two more years in the division.
Also getting her personal record Saturday was Cheyanne Jones (Crab Orchard, eighth grade). She turned in her best performance of the season with a time of 13:49, which ranked her 33rd in the state for middle school girls.
