Schlafer to be inducted into TSSAA Hall of Fame


CROSSVILLE — The 2013 TSSAA Hall of Fame inductees have been selected. Twelve new members will be inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame at the annual luncheon at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Murfreesboro on Saturday, April 20.

Three administrators, five coaches, three officials and one contributor will be inducted that day to join others in the annual gathering of those selected since the process began in 1982.

Those being inducted at this year’s luncheon are: Johnny Grimes, administrator from Jasper; Fred Kessler, administrator from Bolivar; Dan Schlafer, administrator from Fairfield Glade; Wes Elrod, coach from Lebanon; Sammy Fisher, coach from Decaturville; Jack Harlow, coach from McMinnville; Sherry Hooks, coach from Kingsport; David Russell, coach from Bradford; Dorris Armstrong, official from Nashville; Larry Hutchinson, official from Mountain City; Susan Williamson, official from Knoxville; and Mike and Karen Parker, contributors from Harrison.

"I am honored and humbled by it. I didn't see this coming," said Schlafer Wednesday afternoon. I have been very fortunate to work with wonderful, wonderful people. I don't know who nominated me, but I am very grateful."

Schlafer has spent nearly 40 years in education as a teacher, coach, and administrator. He has worked in the Monroe and Cumberland County school systems, as well as a couple of schools in the Knoxville area. He has been extremely involved with the Tennessee School Boards Association, and has received numerous accolades from TSSAA for his service to high school athletics.

The Hall of Fame luncheon will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20. The luncheon is to not only honor the new inductees and their families, but to honor all past inductees into the TSSAA Hall of Fame.

Tickets will go on sale on Monday, March 4. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased by visiting the website — Please print off the ticket form and mail it to the TSSAA office along with a check or money order. All ticket orders will be available for pick-up on the day of the luncheon. There will be NO ticket sales at the door.
