SMHS beats Brainerd in Maryville Wednesday

CROSSVILLE — The Stone Memorial basketball teams return to the court this weekend in after Christmas tournaments.

Coach Neil Capp's SMHS Panthers defeated the Brainerd Panthers 93-82 in the opening round of the Renasant Bank Boys' Christmas Tournament at Maryville High School Wednesday night to advance in the winner's bracket against Sevier County Thursday evening.

Other Thursday action was William Blount vs. Morristown East, Cental vs. Alcoa, Austin-East vs. Brainerd, Campbell County vs. Greeneville, McMinn County vs. Fulton, Webb vs. Maplewood and Bradley Central vs. Maryville.

The tournament concludes on Saturday.

SMHS 93, Brainerd 82: According to the Knoxville News Sentinel Thursday morning, the Panthers opened the game with a 37-19 first quarter run,  but Brainerd sliced the lead to 53-44 at the break. SMHS outscore Brainerd 40-38 in the second half to post the victory.

Leading the way for SMHS were Gage Spence (nine points), Brock Rowan (29), Tyler Yoder (29), Matt Troino (2), Mitch Ball (4), Justin Simmons (13) and Luke Matthews (7).

Stone buried 10 three-point baskets — Rowan with six and Yoder with four.

•Coach John Walker's Lady Panthers are playing in the Jon Loden Holiday Classic at Midway High School through Saturday. They opened the tournament Thursday morning against Oakdale.

Other girls games Thursday were Monterey vs. Coalfield, Happy Valley vs. Portland and Jellico vs. Midway.

Regular season: The Panthers open Distrct 4AA play Jan. 4 against Loudon, beginning at 4:15 p.m. with a girls junior varsity game.
