Obstacles help build the CCHS Jets Soccer Program

CROSSVILLE — Cumberland County Jets hosted the Dekalb County Tigers Tuesday night and were faced with another obstacle — spring break  and low attendance; however, they  came away with a 2-1 win.

This year’s Jets program is in a developing year with a youthful team of 26 players of which more than half are in their rookie year.

Due to spring break, the Jets stepped on to the field with an available 17 players.

“Our low attendance for this week’s game has it pros and cons. Pros being we are able to provide others with a strong competitive experience to build from. Cons being that we are forced to change formations and we aren’t able to challenge our starting squad in its entity before district games approach,” says Assistant Coach Drea Marshall.

Despite the unfamiliarity of the varsity game for too many of the rookies, the Jets approached the game and its obstacles with three goals established by Coach Cub Whitson. The first goal was to start the game ready to play as the Jets are on spring break and have experienced several rescheduled games due to this  season’s unusual weather. In the opening of the game, the Jets energy was high  as the Jets had solid movement.

The Jets were the first to attack the goal and  on a corner kick sent from Shawnee Foster to Jarrod Lee, the Jets were on the board. Whitson’s second goal was to defend all set plays which the Jets were successful on, only conceding a goal, from Jets keeper Xane Hazelwood, in the  start of the second half on a breakaway. The Jets' final goal was met when

Shawnee Foster responded to the Tigers’ breakaway with breakaway supported by a strong defensive transition and a nutmeg putting the Jets up 2-1 over the Tigers.

“Establishing our goals and overcoming our obstacles each game is crucial to our development. Our boys are always up to the challenge and when they work  together with diverse levels of play successfully, I couldn’t be more proud,”  says Whitson, whose team improved to 2-0-1.

The Jets hosted Oliver Springs Thursday evening, weather permitting, and will host Clinton Monday night.
