Hutson, Kington to continue track careers on collegiate level

CROSSVILLE — Last Wednesday morning, Stone Memorial High School track team members Rachel Hutson and Makayla Kington signed their National Letters of Intent to participate in college athletics for the 2013-'14 school year.

Hutson will be going to Carson Newman College to compete for the Lady Eagles cross country and track team,s while fellow senior Makayla Kington will be going to Tennessee Tech to throw for Crossville native Tony Cox.

“Both of these girls have done what they needed in the classroom and on the playing field to get to the next level. Makayla gets one more shot next week at the TSSAA State Championships. Unfortunately for Rachel she came up just short of her goal going to get to state meet. I am excited to see what they will be able to accomplish at the next level," said Head track coach Matt Bates.

Kington throw 30'8.5" in the shot put at the TSSAA A/AA East Middle Subsection, placing second, and threw 102'4" in the discus at the TSSAA A/AA Middle subsection, placing first place.

At the sectional meet May 14 at CAK, Kington tossed the shot 31'1" to finish fourth, putting her in a position for a berth in the state meet as a wild card.

In the discuss, she came out a little flat in her first two throws and was fifth. Her last two throws vaulted her into first, including a final throw of 110'9.5" for a school record.

She has been a member of the track and field team for two years.

Hutson, who has been on the team for three years, ran 6:34.08 in the 1600 meters at the TSSAA A/AA East Middle Sub-sectional, placing sixth, and ran a personal best 13:006.13 in the 3200-meters at the TSSAA A/AA East Middle Subsection, placing third. She also competed in the 3200 (13:06.13) and 4x400 relay at the East Middle Section May 14.
