After a rainout on Monday night at Rockwood, the SMHS Panther baseball team started the season at home, losing an extra inning affair Tuesday night to Cookeville 13-10.
At one point, Stone found themselves at a 10-2 deficit, but fought back to tie the game at 10-10 in the bottom of the seventh. Cookeville would go on to win in the eighth with three runs for a 13-10 final.
Junior John Martin took the mound for 2 2/3 innings, when sophomore Rayne Bennett entered the game in relief. Bennett held the Cavaliers at bay, as the Panthers fought their way back into the game.
Senior Sawyer Casey reached first on the first Panther hit of the season, followed by singles punched by teammates Luke Matthews, A.J. Tarallo and Wayne Burns game-tying RBI.
Clay Wilson took over the mound in the top of the eighth.
Cookeville's Darian Tubbs reached on a single and would score after teammates Jamie Paisley and Alex Dixon hit back-to-back doubles. Dixon reached home on an error before Wilson got the third out with a strikeout.
Austin Helton reached first in the bottom of the eighth on an error but was stranded, as the next three batters went down in order.
Wilson took the loss for the Panthers, while Alex Jones earned the save for the Cavaliers.
Stone will travel to Sequatchie County later this week to participate in the Sequatchie County High School Tournament.
