Panthers notch overtime victory at Upperman

CROSSVILLE — The Stone Memorial basketball teams opened the season with a Hall of Fame game at Upperman Tuesday, with the Panthers winning 56-53 in overtime and Lady Panthers losing 52-35.

SMHS 56, Upperman 53: The Panthers outscored the Bees 3-0 in the extra session to take the victory.

First-year coach Neil Capp's team started out slow, trailing 12-5 after the first quarter, but both teams scored 16 points in the second quarter, with the Bees maintaining a 28-21 advantage at the break.

Brock Rowan had 11 points in the second quarter for the Panthers, while Cody DeVillanueva had nine for the Bees.

Justin Simmons scored six third quarter points to help the Panthers outscored the hosts 18-15 to slice the lead to 43-39, and used a 14-10 fourth quarter to tie the game at 53-53 at the end of regulation.

Rowan, who signed a scholarship with Shorter College Wednesday afternoon, led his team with 21 points, including five treys, five rebounds, one assist and two steals, while Simmons added 14 points, 12 rebounds, one assist and one steal, and Gage Spence chipped in 10 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Rounding out the scoring were Tyler Yoder (eight points, seven rebounds) and Luke Matthews (three points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal). Brandon Thomas and Parker Hill also played.

Upperman 52, Lady Panthers 35: The Lady Bees built a 31-13 lead at the break, but SMHS outscored the hosted 13-9 to slice the deficit to 40-26 after three quarters; however, the Lady Bees used a 12-9 fourth quarter to secure the victory.

This was the first game for new Lady Panther John Walker.

Leading scorers for Stone were Faith VanRuden (12 points, five rebounds, two assists, four steals), Abby Griffin (seven points, five rebounds), Jacki Livesay (five points), Sydney Early (four points), Kerigan Smith (two points) and Courtney White (two points, three rebounds, four steals). Jordan Thompson hauled down two rebounds.

SMHS will host the Rockwood girls and the McCallie boys beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Hall of Fame games, before opening the season Monday night at Clarkrange.
