Lady Jets finish fourth in District 6AAA Tournament


CROSSVILLE — The Cumberland County High Lady Jets finished fourth in the District 6AAA Tournament Monday night, losing 60-37 to White County, and will travel to Bradley Central Friday evening to face the Bearettes, 51-43 winner over Cleveland in the District 5AAA Tournament.

Sloane VanWinkle and Alli Hyder buried back-to-back treys for a 6-0 lead, but the hosts retaliated with an 11-5 run to tie the game at 11-11 after one quarter. Rebecca Teeple added four points for the Lady Jets, who were four of 13 from the  floor and one of two from the charity stripe with four turnovers.

There were three ties and four lead changes before the Warriorettes 25-21 lead late in the second quarter, but a layup by Kelsie Eldridge and a three-pointer by VanWinkle gave the Lady Jets a 26-25 lead at the break.

CCHS was four of nine from the field with four turnovers, while White County was four of 11 from the field and five of six from the charity stripe.

With the score tied 29-29 early in the third quarter, the Warriorettes reeled off 14 unanswered points to take a 43-29 advantage. The Lady Jets were one of 14 from the field with five turnovers. Teeple had the only Jet field goal, while Gina DIck was one for two from the charity stripe.

White County outscored CCHS 17-8 in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Jets were three of 14 from the field with two turnovers. VanWinkle buried a trey to stop the scoring drought early in the final stanza, while Teeple added five points in the quarter.

For the game, CCHS was 12 of 52 from the field and seven of 10 from the free throw line with 27 rebounds, seven assists, six steals and 16 turnovers, while White County was 19 of 40 from the field and 17 of 25 from the charity stripe with 14 turnovers.

Individual scoring for the Lady Jets were Makenzie Iles (three points, two rebounds, one steal), Maddi Potter, Dick (three points, six rebounds, two assists, three steals), Hyder (four points, four rebounds, two assists), Victoria Lee (two rebounds), Sloane VanWinkle (12 points, one rebound, three assists, one steal), Skylar VanWinkle, Rebekah Teeple (11 points, five rebounds, one steal), Kelsie Eldridge (four points, five rebounds) and Kassidy Sommer (two rebounds).

The Lady Jets will face the Bearettes (25-2), who had three players in double figures — Kayla Withrow (12 points), Brooke Copeland (19 points, 15 rebounds) and Rebecca Reuter (14 points, 12 rebounds) — in the win over Cleveland, who will host White County.

The Lady Jets lost to Bradley Central 82-42 for the 2012 Region 3AAA crown last year at CCHS.

All Tournament: Sloane VanWinkle was named to the District 6AAA All-Tournament team, along with Latha Wilson (White County), Ginny Claiborne (Coffee County), Hannah Goolsby (Cookeville), Allyson Quillen (White County), Alaina Lusk (Coffee County), Karagan Turner (Cookeville), Missy Jones (Coffee County), Sydney Marek (Cookeville) and Sydney Robinson (Cookeville).
