Lady Panther wrestlers advance to state tourney

CROSSVILLE — The Stone Memorial wrestling team had a big week on the junior varsity level last week. The Panthers had five champions at the Halls Junior Varisty and Girls Tournament.

Tournament champions were Anthony Alegria (120), Jacob Flannery (138), Connor Crockett (170), Christian Staton (195) and Laura Napier (girls division). Blake Hicks (145) placed third.

“These guys did a great job today. Three of the five boys that placed are rookie starters on the varsity. Basically, what that means is they have taken a lot of beatings at the varsity level because they are first year wrestlers. They all now agree that that time and experience has paid off.  I am very proud of them for sticking with it through the learniing process,” said Coach Brian Parker.

“Anthony pinned his three opponents with ease. He has really been working hard on his leg riding and it shows. Jacob has the skills to beat kids his age and a little work on his strength will have him winning more varsity matches. Connor has a great attitude and continues to improve with mat time. Christian once again dominates at the JV level.   The future of Panther wrestling looks good,” Parker added.

On Saturday, the Panthers participated in JV Regionals and the Lady Panthers wrestled in the Girls East Regionals. Both teams had two place winners in their respective tournaments.

Blake Hicks had fours wins and placed third, while Christian Staton placed fourth.

“Things are starting to click for Blake. He is learning to shoot better and his moves on top and bottom are improving. I am impressed with his persistence the last two weeks,” stated Parker.

Laura Napier was region champion for the Lady Panthers and qualifies for the Girls’ State Tournament as one of the top two seeds in the big tournament. Achaia McDonough placed fourth and also qualified for Girls’ State. MacKenzie Wylie participated but did not place.

“Laura is doing a great job as just a sophomore.  I think she is capable of winning the Girls’ State Tournament. Achaia is a freshman that is peaking at the right time. This upcoming tournamnet will be a great experience for her,” said Parker.

The boys’ varsity regional is coming up Feb. 8 and the boys’ and girls’ state tournament is Feb. 13-15.
