SMHS wrestlers lose to Sevier County, Seymour

CROSSVILLE — The SMHS wrestling team beat Sevier County (49-24) and lost to Seymour (31-48) on Tuesday night at Cumberland County High School.

“These were two big region matches. We knew we would beat Sevier and we knew we had be on top of our game to beat Seymour. It just was not in the cards for us tonight. Several of our guys wrestled flat and gave up bonus points when they got pinned giving Seymour the advantage,” said Coach Brian Parker.

In the Sevier County match, the Panthers got pins from Cody McCarl (106) and Dakota Karge (220) and decisions from Juan Loza (182) and Chase Eichner (285). Marco Hernandez (132), Jacob Flannery (138), Blake Hicks (145), Joel Hernandez (160) and Justin Johnson (195) received forfeits.

“Anthony Alegria lost to a tough Sevier kid, but wrestled a great match. He only lost by three points where as this guy beat him by 15 points a month ago. He has improved tremendously,” added Parker.

The Seymour match started out great for the Panthers, but ended with a winning streak for Seymour.

Starting at 160 pounds, the Panthers won six out of the first seven matches with pins by Joel Hernandez and Justin Johnson, decisions by Karge and McCarl, and forfeits for Loza and Eichner; however, Seymour won the last six matches by pin to take the team victory.

“You can’t win the big matches when you are losing so many by pin. We were wrestling well in a few of those matches and turned around and got pinned.  We will be working on defending cradles and other pinning situations this week. You must have the will to keep that shoulder up when on your back, to give yourself a chance to win in the next period,” added Parker.

“On the upside, Hernandez pinned a kid that beat him earlier this season.  Karge also avenged an earlier loss to his Seymour opponent. These guys have both made big improvements from a month ago,” Parker continued.

The Panthers head to Heritage on Saturday for a team touranment in which they will face Heritage, Knox Catholic and Karns as well as two other teams.
