Cumberland County splits with Rhea County

CROSSVILLE — The Cumberland County High School basketball teams celebrated senior night Saturday by splitting with Rhea County. The Jets defeated the Golden Eagles 70-61, while the Lady Jets were beaten 47-41.

CCHS 70, Rhea County 61: Seniors Dylan Qualls (19 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals) and Tayler Houston (19 points, six rebounds, one assist, one steal) led the Jets (15-14) over the Golden Eagles.

Rounding out the scoring were Jon Elmore (one rebound, one assist), Diego Poore (seven points, one rebound, two assists), Bryan Young, J.J. Miller (two points, four rebounds), Alex Dixon, Cade Smith (two points, two rebounds), Logan Parsons (10 points, five rebounds, one assist, four steals) and Cameron O'Rourke (nine points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal).

Jalen Smith led Rhea County with 29 points.

Houston scored eight of his 19 points in the first quarter to help the Jets to a 14-7 lead. CCHS was five of 13 from the field with six turnovers, while holding Rhea County to three of nine from the floor with seven miscues.

CCHS hit one of 11 from the field in the second quarter to trail 25-17 at the break. Qualls had two points for CCHS, while O'Rourke had a free throw.

After the bad second quarter, CCHS came back with a 21-15 third quarter to slice the lead to 40-38, thanks to three three-pointers by Houston, including a buzzer beater to slice the deficit to two points. O'Rourke had six points for the Jets.

CCHS was eight of 11 from the field and four of six from the charity stripe with four turnovers.

The Jets opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run, sparked by Poore and Qualls with five and four points, respectively, to build a 47-40 lead with 5:53 left in the game. CCHS outscored Rhea County 23-21 the rest of the way to take the victory.

CCHS was 21 of 54 from the field and 20 of 31 from the charity stripe with 29 rebounds, nine assists and 11 steals.

Rhea County 47, CCHS 41: The Lady Eagles spoiled the Lady Jets' senior night with a 47-41 setback.

Rhea County took a 12-5 lead with 3:18 left in the first quarter, but the Lady Jets finished the frame with a 5-0 run to trail 12-10. Sloane VanWinkle and Makenzie Iles each had a three-point basket for the Lady Jets.

The Lady Eagles stretched the lead to 18-10, but a trey by Iles helped the Lady Jets finish the quarter with an 11-4 spurt. Kassidy Sommer and Gina Dick each had four points for the Lady Jets.

A 12-6 third quarter by the Golden Eagles put them ahead 34-27, but the Lady Jets finished the game with a 14-13 fourth quarter to make the final margin 47-41.

The Lady Jets were led by Iles (12 points, four rebounds, three steals), Maddi Potter, Dick (six points, four rebounds, two steals), Alli Hyder (three points), Sloane VanWinkle (13 points, two rebounds, one steal), Victoria Lee (three rebounds, one steal), Rebekah Teeple (three points, three rebounds, one assist, two steals), and Sommer (four points, three rebounds, one steal).

The Lady Jets were 14 of 42 from the field and five of 12 from the charity stripe with 19 rebounds, one assist and nine steals.

Miller, Cameron O'Rourke, Dylan Qualls, Stephen Thompson and Brian Young; girls basketball: Rebecca Forte and Sloane VanWinkle; cheerleading: Amber Flowers and Tiffany Hassler; and dance team: Coco Bennett, Blaklee Garrett and Karri Netherton.
