Hord, White step up at June 30 ATA shoot

When Larry Hord drives into most any Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) event, everyone else starts wondering who is going to come in second.

The June 30 ATA shoot at the Fairfield Glade Sportsman Club was no exception, when the Helenwood hotshot blasted 98 out of 100 clay targets with his Kolar TA/Max to win the singles event. Although Hord has shot for 18 years, it took the likeable, 60-year-old pipeline welder just two years to reach the upper echelons of the sport as a Class A shooter, which places him in the top two percent of competitive shooters.

Crossville’s Gil Lokey took home the Class B award with a 93, while Lake Tansi’s Jim Ezelle won Class C with a 96.

Clinton’s Larry White won the handicap event with a 92, while shooting 18 yards back from the trap house. James Jameson of Knoxville defeated the 19-23 yard competitors, also with a 92. Hord did not compete in the handicap event.

Thanks to Luanne Brennan for serving lunch and helping in scoring.

The next ATA event will be on July 28 at the sportsman club’s shooting complex on Shorty Barnes Rd.

Remember, you don’t need to be a top dog shooter to shoot in any ATA event. Never shot trap before? Just show up at the club on any Thursday, Saturday or Sunday afternoon with a few bucks to cover the cost of targets and a box of ammo, and the club can provide everything else you needed to get started shooting. Club members will be happy to assist you in breaking targets.
