The Plateau Classic champion Lady Jets hosted District 6AAA foe Cookeville last Thursday night, but the Lady Cavaliers spoiled the party with a 8-1 victory.
The Lady Cavaliers struck early with two runs on the top of the first inning on two walks, an error and a single by Sidney Price off Lady Jet starter Jordyn Wilson.
Cookeville doubled the score to 4-0 with a two-spot in the top of the third inning on a one-out double by Heidi Smith and back-to-back singles by Morgan Harris and Sidney Price and made it 7-0 with three more runs in the top of the fourth on a walk, a fielder's choice, a hitbatsman, a single by Peyton Price, a two-run double by Claudia Hutchins and an RBI single by Smith.
After being retired in order in the bottom of the first, the Lady Jets got back-to-back singles by Samantha Hassler and Kenzie Woods, with a throwing error advancing both to third and second, respectively, but both were stranded.
Katie VanHorn opened the bottom of third when the Lady Cavalier centerfielder dropped her pop fly, but a throw from first baseman Peyton Price to third baseman Sidney Price nailed VanHorn.
With two out, Erin Dille reached on an error and Emily Terpening walked, but both were left stranded.
Hassler was hit by a pitch to open the home half of the fourth. Kenzie Woods singled and Lydia Harris singled to load the bases, but Smith stepped on second to get Harris and threw to first to get Van Horn to end the inning.
Hassler relieved Wilson on the mound in the fifth inning and retired the Lady Cavaliers in order.
CCHS averted the shutout with a solo run on a walk, a single by Terpening and an error to make the score 7-1.
Hassler allowed a single to Leslie Radford and gave up a run in the top of the seventh on a double by Sidney Price and back-to-back singles by Sara Sheets and Olivia Crossman and a fielder's choice to make it 8-1.
Bailey Woods and Dille opened the seventh with consecutive singles, with Bailey Woods scoring on Bernabei's single. Hassler singled and Kenzie Woods relieved on an error, allowing Dille to score for the final margin of 8-3.
Wilson and Hassler allowed eight runs on 12 hits with one hitbatsman and two walks. Hassler and Kenzie Woods each had two hits for the Lady Jets, while Bailey Woods, Erin Dille, Emily Terpening, Bernabei, Amber Johnson and Harris each poked one hit.
