Jets shut out Panthers 2-0 in non-district battle

CROSSVILLE — The CCHS Jets, behind the pitching of John Bilbrey and Aaron Jones, shut out the SMHS Panthers 2-0 Monday evening at Jet Park.

Bilbrey pitched six innings, allowing three hits with 14 strikeouts and two walks, to earn the victory, while Jones struck out and allowed on hit in one inning to earn a save.

Bilbrey recorded an RBI single, while Cameron O'Rourke had the other hit for the Jets (4-1).

Mark McDonald was the losing pitcher, allowing two hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Luke Matthews had two singles and three stolen bases, while Jared Beaty and Brandon Cole each had one hit.

The game was a pitcher's duel between Bilbrey and McDonald.

After retiring the first two Panthers, Bilbrey allowed a single to Jared Beaty and a walk, with both runners advancing on a passed ball, but the Tennessee Tech signee fanned Nathan Greene to end the threat.

He struck out the side in the second.

After walking Matthews to start the third, he struck out the next three Panthers in the fourth.

Cole led off the fourth with a single to right, but was forced out at second on a Greene's fielder's choice to Jet shortstop Tayler Houston. He struck out two more to end the inning.

He allowed a one-hit single and a stolen base to Matthews in the fifth, but retired the next three hitters, before Cole reached on a one-out error in the sixth. He struck out two more hitters to end his stint on the mound.

Jones struck out his first two hitters in the seventh, allowed a single and stole base to Matthews, but Panther designated hitter Brian Frye grounded to third baseman Cole Van Horn to end the game.

McDonald allowed one run in the bottom of the first on a walk to Matt Ledbetter and Bilbrey's RBI double.

He retired the next eight Jets, including three strikeouts, before he hit Bilbrey to start the bottom of the fourth. Bilbrey stole second and scored on back-to-back groundouts by Van Horn and Dylan Fehr. Cameron O'Rourke  singled, Houston walked, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.

McDonald plunked Aaron Jones to load the bases, but Bobby Uebelacker grounded to Panther first baseman Jared South to end the uprising.

He retired the side in order in the fifth, and allowed a walk in the sixth to finish the game.

The teams will co-host the Mountain Man Classic Thursday-Saturday.
