The week of Oct. 1-6 has been a busy week for CCHS cross country teams. It has also been a rainy, cold one.
On Tuesday, Oct. 2, Jets runners competed at Dayton's Fort Bluff Camp, finishing third out of nine teams. Senior Ryan Bedgood and the varsity boys' team scored well as the team ran a muddy unfamiliar course in great style.
As a heavy fog descended on the woodsy course, Bedgood, Kevin Buffkin, Landon Crawford, Bradley Mathis, Todd Wisor, Kyle Lockwood and Chris Pendergrast ran tenaciously to finish the race.
The varsity girls' team consisted of juniors Meghan Server and Caroline Cravens, freshman hopeful Lindsey Roysdon; Selinda Bryant, Taylor Hammons, Jennifer Hedgecoth, Sharon Ulloa and Marissa Vincent. Although not placing in the top five, several of the girls improved their times by making personal records.
Saturday, Oct. 6, was a bit different, as the race was four to five hours away in Danville, AL. The Jesse Owens Classic is a premier race with runners from five states competing for recognition of college coaches. Over 5,000 runners in races of various divisions ran in yet another cold, rainy venue. Although the Jets cross country team did not fare as well as in previous races, 13 of the 21 runners on the CCHS team improved their times to make personal records (best times ever) for this season.
Senior Ryan Bedgood ran 17:30. Kevin Buffkin, Bradley Mathis, AJ Page and Todd Wisor broke 18 minutes for the 5K race. Freshman Lindsey Roysdon ran 21:59, Brianna Taylor ran 23:07 and Sharon Ulloa improved her time by three minutes. Junior varsity runners Aidan Morrison, Nathan Phillips and Ryan Tabor showed great improvement at 20:33, 21:26 and 20:50, respectively.
"With only two races before the region qualifying race, Jets runners are working hard to reach a season peak for their chance to qualify for state championship for another year. CCHS cross country teams have participated in the state contest for several years in a row. No reason to think they will not do it again," said Coach Debra Markham.
CCHS competed in the Chattanooga Cross Country League meet Oct. 11, and will close out the regular season Oct. 18 in the Front Runners meet.
