South rebounds for win over Pickett County

CROSSVILLE — The first half of the Cumberland County elementary basketball league ended Thursday night  with these games — South at Pine View, Pleasant Hill at Homestead, Brown at North and Crab Orchard at Stone. Martin has already completed league play.

There are no more regular season games listed for January; however, the dates for the elementary varsity tournament have been announced.

The tournament will be played Jan. 25, 27 and 29 at Cumberland County High School. The nine first round quarterfinal games will be played Jan. 25. The four semi-finals will be played Jan. 27 and the championship games will be contested Jan. 30, according to CCHS athletic director/assistant principal Jon Hall. The Jan. 25 games will tip off at 8 a.m.

South 53, Pickett County 48: The South Rebels rallied in the second half to defeat Pickett County Tuesday night.

South trailed 25-24 at the break, but outscored the visitors 29-23 in the second half to secure the victory.

The leading scorers for South were Kaleb McCoy (8), Trey Christopher (15), Mason Wyatt (5), Zach Street (16), Trever Parsons (2), Brandon Dalton (2) and Reese Dykes (6). Jack Eldridge and Bryce Keyes also played.

Results of games played two weeks ago or older will not be accepted. When faxing copies of the pages from the scorebooks or the provided scoresheets, please be sure all of the names are legible and include first names of all players. Varsity coaches are reminded to submit schedule additions for January, as no games are listed on the composite elementary schedule. Also, when there is a threat of inclement weather and the possiblity of no school the following day, coaches are asked to submit game results before leaving the gym that evening.     The Cookeville Cavaliers scored seven runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to claim a 7-0 District 6AAA victory over the CCHS Jets Monday night in Cookeville.

    The SMHS Lady Panthers had another stellar day while the Panthers hammered out a solid day in Knoxville in the Tennessee Relays over the weekend.. The Lady Panthers finished ninth out of the 57 scheduled teams to compete, while the boys took 32nd out of the 57.

    The Stone Memorial tennis teams lost their District 6AAA matches to Rhea County Monday afternoon. The boys lost 9-0, while the girls were beaten 7-2.
