Lady Jets advance into Jon Loden championship game

CROSSVILLE — The CCHS Lady Jets earned in a berth in the championship game of the Jon Loden Christmas Tournament Monday night at Midway High School against the Upperman Lady Bees, after defeating the Claiborne County Lady Bulldogs 81-42 Saturday and Dade County 60-30 Friday.

CCHS 81,Claiborne County 42: Claborne County opened the game with a 5-0 run with 5:48 remaining, but a layup by Alli Hyder with 5:14 left sent the Lady Jets on a 19-8 spurt to take a 19-13 lead by quarter's end.

The Lady Jets were six of 22 from the field, while holding Claiborne County to four of 13 with five turnovers. Hyder had seven markers for the Lady Jets.

CCHS outscored Claiborne County 22-10 in the second quarter for a 41-23 advantage at the break. The Lady Jets were eight of 22 from the field, while holding Claiborne County to four of 12 from the field with 15 turnovers, including eight steals by Destiny Carlton. Makenzie Iles had eight second quarter points.

The Lady Jets continued their torrid play, outscoring Claiborne County 24-10 in the third quarter, as they hit eight of 18 from the field and forced seven more turnovers.

A 16-9 fourth quarter gave the Lady Jets their 14th straight win and a berth in the tournament championship.

Every Lady Jet contributed to the cause.

Statistical leaders were Iles (23 points, three rebounds, two assists, one steal), Lindsey Norrod (two rebounds, one steal), Gina Dick (six points, three boards, one assist, six steals), Hyder (eight poins two boards, four assists, two steals), Carlton (18 points, one assist, nine steals), Victoria Lee (two points, one board, one assist, two steals), Madison McLaughlin (two points), Sydney Clark (two points, one rebound, two assists, three steals), Skylar VanWinkle (two points, two rebounds), Teeple (10 points, three boards, one assist, three steals), Klaire Varney (four rebounds, one assist, one steal), Kelsie Eldridge (two points, five rebounds, three assists), Bailey Davis (two points, one rebound) and Courtney Smith (four points, 10 boards).

CCHS 60, Dade County 30: The Lady Jets continued their winning ways with the big win over the outmanned squad from Trenton, GA in the quarterfinals of the Jon Loden Christmas Classic at Midway High School Friday afternoon.

The Lady Jets outscored Dade County 12-0 in the first quarter, hitting six of 15 from the field, while holding their opponents to zero for three from the field with 10 turnovers. Destiny Carlton had four points and two steals, while Kelsie Eldridge came off the bench to score four points.

Sarah Reid scored her team's first bucket of the game early to slice the gap to 12-2, but a basket by Iles triggered an 11-0 run to raise the deficit to 23-2. CCHS would finish the quarter with a 13-7 spurt to make the score 38-9 at the break.

CCHS was 10 of 18 from the field, while holding Dade County to two of five from the field and five of eight from the free throw line with seven turnovers.

Iles had eight points for CCHS.

A 14-2 Lady Jet run swelled the lead to 50-11, with CCHS finishing the quarter ahead 51-15, putting the TSSAA mercy rule into effect in the final quarter.

CCHS started the final quarter with a 7-0 run for a 58-15 lead, but Dade County finished the game with a 15-2 run to make the final score 60-30.

Reid had seven points for Dade County, which was three of six from the field and eight of 10 from the charity stripe with a couple of turnovers.

Two telling stats were the Lady Jets held Dade Count to seven of 16 from the field and 13 of 19 from the free throws with more than 30 turnovers, including 29 steals.

Statistical leaders for the Lady Jets were Iles (12 points, two rebounds, one assist, two steals), Lindsey Norrod (two points, one rebound), Gina Dick (nine points, one assist, three steals), Alli Hyder (four points, one rebound, one assist, five steals), Carlton (nine points, two rebounds, one assist, five steals), Victoria Lee (two points, four rebounds, one assist, two steals), Sydney Clark (three points, one steal), Skylar VanWinkle (one rebound, one assist, three steals), Rebekah Teeple (eight points, four rebounds, one assist, four steals), Klaire Varney (two points, one rebound, one assist, one steal), Kelsie Eldridge (six points, one rebound), Bailey Davis (two points, one rebound) and Courtney Smith (two points, four rebounds). Madison McLaughlin also played.

Schedule: CCHS will return home Jan. 3 against the Chattanooga Patriots at 5 p.m., followed by the Jets game at 6:30 p.m.
