Jets collect six hits in 12-2 loss at Cookeville

CROSSVILLE — The CCHS Jets were defeated 12-2 by the Cookeville Cavaliers in District 6AAA baseball action Monday night in Cookeville.

Cavalier starter Ryan Eberle held the Jets to two runs on six hits. Caleb Savage went three for three with an RBI, and Spencer Wise cracked three hits with two RBIs. Brody Whittaker ripped a two-run homer.

Tayler Houston suffered the loss, allowing 12 runs on 13 hits with two strike outs and two walks, while Jacob Hayes pitched one third of an inning allowing two runs on one hit with one walk.

Houston, Ethan Cunningham, Nathaniel Wyatt, Reed Shaw, Dylan Fehr and Ryan Burgess each cracked one hit. Shaw's was a long home run .

The Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on two singles, two doubles and two stolen bases, and then scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the third on four singles, two doubles, an error, a fielder's choice, a walk and a passed ball. The big blow was Patrick Mills' two-run single.

Cookeville made it 10-0 in the bottom of the fourth a double by Savage, Wise's RBI single and a two-run homer by Alex Dixon.

Eberle retired the first seven Jets, before Burgess reached on a one-out single in the top of the third. Houston singled with two out, but he was erased in an inning-ending groundout.

Wyatt singled and went to second on a groundout, but was left stranded.

Fehr led off the top of the fifth with a double and scored on an error to avert the shutout.

Shaw led off the top of the sixth with a long homer off the scoreboard in deep center field. O'Rourke reached on a two-out error, but was erased in an inning-ending force play.

Whittaker's one-out, pinchhit homer in the bottom of the sixth ended the game on the TSSAA 10-run rule.

Schedule; CCHS hosted Cookeville Tuesday night and co-hosted the Mountain Man Classic with SMHS Thursday-Saturday.

    The field for the 16th annual Golf Capital of Tennessee Women's Open hosted by the Tennessee Golf Association is 50.7 percent (73 of 144) complete for its July 31-Aug. 2 run at Stonehenge Golf Club in Fairfield Glade as the entry deadline is at 5 p.m. July 16.

  • FCA to host scramble Aug. 16

    The Upper Cumberland  Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be hosting a golf scramble Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Heatherhurst Crag course.
    Registration starts at 7 a.m. with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. The cost per player is $100, which includes golf with cart, a Lefty's BBQ lunch, a goody bag, hat, great team and individual prizes, and support for the local FCA huddle groups.
