CCHS wins four games in Monroe Co. Thanksgiving Classic

The Cumberland County High School basketball teams flew into Monroe County over the Thanksgiving weekend and came away with four victories to improve to 4-1 on the young season at Sequoyah High School.
Josh Epperson's Lady Jets defeated Sweetwater 63-42 Friday night and then beat the Sequoyah Lady Chiefs 62-44, while Will Foster's Jets bested Sweetwater 70-56 and Sequoyah 68-61 on Saturday.
Nov. 27 games
Lady Jets 63, Sweetwater 42: Emily Scarbrough pumped in 26 points with two rebounds and one steal to lead the Lady Jets over the Lady Wildcats, while Jaclyn Reagan added 19 points, with three boards and five steals.
Katie Thomasson led Sweetwater with 15 points, while Shea Ervin added 10 markers.
A three-pointer by Reagan gave the Lady Jets a 7-2 first quarter lead, but the Lady Wildcats would reel off four unanswered points to slice deficit to 7-6. A trey by Scarbrough keyed a 3-2 run to finish the quarter with a 10-8 lead.
Sweetwater sliced the advantage to 17-16 midway through the second quarter, but a layup by Erica Lane keyed a 14-7 run to swell the lead to 31-23 at the break.
CCHS would hit six of 12 shots from the field and six of six from the free throw line, while forcing six turnovers to build the advantage.
For the half, CCHS was nine of 23 with five turnovers, while holding the Lady Wildcats to 10 of 17 with 15 turnovers.
Scarbrough outscored Sweetwater by herself in the third quarter, 16-10, to give her team a 47-33 advantage. CCHS was six of 10 from the field with six turnovers, while Sweetwater was four of 11 with five turnovers. Scarbrough had four treys.
The tempo slowed in the fourth quarter 16-9 for the final score of 63-42.

CCHS 70, Sweetwater 56: Derreck Hankins chipped in 14 markers, one rebound and three assists to lead the Jets over the Wildcats. Caleb Parsons added 12 points, three rebounds, two rebounds and three assists, and Robbie Poore chipped in 11 markers, three rebounds and one assist.
Andrew Cravens added eight markers, three rebounds, two steals and one assist, while Stephen Hill netted eight points, six rebounds and one assist.
Joey Raby added 11 markers.
The Jets hit eight of 14 shots in the first quarter to take a 20-10 lead, while holding the Wildcats to three of nine from the floor with four turnovers.
A 15-14 second quarter gave the Jets a 35-24 advantage at the break, as they hit five of eight from the field with seven turnovers, while holding Sweetwater four of 11 from the field with four turnovers. Free throws made was the difference -— Sweetwater, five of nine, and CCHS, three of four.
Sweetwater sliced the Jets' lead to 42-37 with 2:15 left in the third quarter, behind Billingsley's seven points, but a trey by John Bilbrey keyed an 8-6 spurt to raise the score to 50-43 by quarter's end.
CCHS hit eight of 12 free throws, while Sweetwater was five of seven.
The Jets, behind Parsons' seven points, outscored the Wildcats 20-13 for the 70-56 final score.

CCHS 62, Sequoyah 44: Emily Scarbrough, Erica Lane and Taylor Vaden tallied 15, 14 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the Lady Jets to their victory over the host Lady Chiefs.
"We did a good job playing on the road," said Lady Jet Coach Josh Epperson. "The girls took another forward."
Vaden had seven rebounds, five assists and six steals, while Jacyln Reagan added seven points, five boards, six assists and three steals. Jaime Rector added nine points, six rebounds and one steal.
Danielle Slack led the Lady Chiefs with 16 points.
With the score tied at 7-7, a trey by Lane triggered a 13-5 run to give the Lady Jets a 20-12 advantage in a lenghty first quarter. Lane had six points, while Rector added five and Scarbrough four for the Lady Jets who were six of 12 from the field, while holding the hosts to four of eight with six turnovers.
The Lady Jets stretched the lead to 34-19 with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter, but the Lady Chiefs finished the quarter with a 5-2 run to make the score 36-24 at the break.
CCHS was four of 10 from the field, while holding Sequoyah to three of 11 from the field with six turnovers.
Two three-pointers by Scarbrough and one each by Vaden and Lane helped the Lady Jets outscore Sequoyah 17-10 for a 53-34 advantage after three stanzas.
Sequoyah finished the contest with a 10-9 run to make the final score 62-44.

CCHS 68, Sequoyah 61: Caleb Parsons poured in 24 points, with four rebounds, one assist and one steal, while Andrew Cravens added 15 points, 14 boards and one steal to lead the Jets.
Matt Jones added five points, eight rebounds, two steals and two assists, and Robbie Poore chipped in nine points, three rebounds and one steal.
Tevin West, Jethro Griffin and Derrick Atchley tallied 16, 14 and 10 markers, respectively, to spark the Chiefs.
"We played a very good second half," said Jet coach Will Foster.
With the score tied 4-4, the Chiefs went on the warpath, outscoring the Jets 24-14 for a 28-18 lead by quarter's end. The hosts were 12 of 17 from the field with one turnover, while the Jets were six of nine from the field with six turnovers.
Cumberland County trailed 38-18 with 3:07 left in the half on the first of two free throws by Griffin, but Parsons hit two free throws to key a 9-5 run to shrink the deficit to 43-27 at the break.
The Jets were two of six from the field with six turnovers, while holding the Chiefs to six of 13 from the field with one turnover.
The Jet fans who made the trip to Sequoyah High School Saturday learned the team was "down but not out" of the game.
Whatever adjustments Foster and Assistant Coach Blaine Moore made in the locker room at the break worked.
The Jets opened the third quarter with a 13-2 run to slice the lead to 45-40, by hitting nine of 11 free throws, which would be crucial down the stretch.
A jumper by Steven Bledsoe keyed a 9-5 run to swell the lead to 54-45 by quarter's end.
CCHS was 10 of 12 free throws and four of nine from the field with two turnovers, while the hosts were four of eight from the field and two of four from the charity stripe with two turnovers.
Another Bledsoe bucket gave the hosts a 58-49 lead, but a three-point play by Cravens with 5:30 left in the game sent the Jets on a 12-0 run for a 61-58 advantage on another three-point by Cravens with 2:23 remaining.
Parsons hit two free throws with 3:20 left to tie the game at 58-58, which was the first time the game was tied since 4-4 early in the game, while Cravens' three-point play was the Jets' first lead of the game.
Free throws would be key in the final 2:23. CCHS was six of 14, while Sequoyah was one of six, but CCHS would also hold the Chiefs to two of 12 from the field with four turnovers.
The officials whistled 47 fouls in the game — 30 for the Chiefs and 17 on the Jets, with the Jets hitting 30 of 46 free throws to nine of 16 from the hosts.
Parsons was 14 of 17, including 10 for 10 during one stretch of the game. Cravens was nine of 15 from the charity stripe.
