Five SMHS Panthers named to the 2009 All-District 4AA Soccer Team

The Stone Memorial High School Panthers soccer team ended their best season ever with a 10-3-3 record in May. Five (5) members of this outstanding team were recently named to the All District 4AA teams.

Paul Bergvin, John Taylor and John Villalobos were named to the first team, while Mason Fox and Sammy Fuentes were named to the second team, according to Coach Geir Bergvin. 

Paul Bergvin: "A senior at Stone Memorial High School, Paul played both midfield and defense during the 2009 season. He started every game and scored six (6) goals with 12 assists. He is a three-year team captain. He will play soccer for Brevard College starting the fall 2009," said Coach Geir Bergvin.

John Taylor: "John is not only an exceptional goalie for our team (he stands about 6'3"), but he was also recognized as a Student/Athlete by Tennessee this year. It has been stated that every opponent remembers his coverage of the goal and how difficult it was to get one past him! He scored one goal during the season and had five shut outs. John will attend Tennessee Technological University starting the fall of 2009," added Bergvin. 

John Villalobos: "John has been a great contributor to the team this year. He has been spot on with his free kicks, scoring a total of seven goals, six off of free kicks. These goals always came at crucial times throughout the season, resulting in the decisive goal of the game or a tie!  He is a sophmore and the team looks forward to his contributions in the seasons to come," continued Bergvin.  

Mason Fox: Fox is a junior and a “goal scoring machine” for the Panthers. He recorded 20 goals for the season.

“He has a knack for moving the ball through the opponent’s defense and into their goal,” noted Bergvin. "Mason is also a very versatile player playing offense, midfield and defense. He also played goalie during the second half of one of the Panther’s early season games."

Sammy Fuentes: He is also a junior and has a talent that coaches cannot teach — speed.

“Add his technical and tactical abilities, he always creates imbalance, and often times havoc, in the opponent’s defense," added Bergvin.

He recorded 18 goals for the season. The 2010 Panther soccer season will be led by Fuentes, Fox and Villalobos.

SMHS will be in Region 2, District 4AA with Alcoa, Christian Academy of Knoxville (CAK), Kingston, Loudon and Scott County. The teams in Region 2, District 3AA are Austin-East, Gatlinburg-Pittman, Gibbs, Knox Carter, Knox Fulton, Pigeon Forge and Union County.
