CCHS track and field athletes receive awards for 2009 season

The Cumberland County High School track and field team gathered at Cumberland Mountain State Park's recreation hall last Wednesday evening to receive their awards for the 2009 season.

"I appreciate every one who came tonight," said Assistant Coach Louie DeLorenzo. "I know we got five kids to the state and an army to the sectionals. I am excited about our three freshmen."

DeLorenzo, along with head coach Bruce Heady, opened the evening by presenting letter awards to the Jets and Lady Jets.

Lettering for the Lady Jets were Maggie Bernabei, Madison Davis, Chaylin Dyer, Kelli Hyder, Dimi Iles, Courtney Koehl, Ellie Krumpols, Amelia McCoy, Olivia McCoy, Victoria Ports, Leah Shulley, Amanda Whittle, Katherine Scarborough and Jauscelyn Talford.

Jet letter winners were Gary Blaylock, Brad Davis, Drew DeLorenzo, Ryan Edwards, Jeremy Jacobs, Cory King, Forrest Longway, T.J. Noel, Jacob Parham, Matt Pennycuff, Andrew Phipps, Kyle Pritchard, David Qualls, Ernest Retzer, Spencer Rogers, Tad Smith, Todd Threet, Garrett Blyly and Shaden Tilley.

Madison Davis, Chaylin Dyer, Dimi Iles, Courtney Koehl, Ellie Krumpols, Amelia McCoy, Olivia McCoy, Tori Noel, Victoria Ports and Leah Shulley were recognized as All-Sub-Region.

Madison Davis, Courtney Koehl, Amelia McCoy and Leah Shulley were recognized as All-Region, and received their medals for participating in the state meet. They posted a time of 10:53.35 at the state.

Amelia McCoy also received a medal for participating the 3200, and finished 15th in 14:10.54.

Madison Davis and Amelia McCoy were as co-MVPs.

Madison Davis set a school and senior class record time of 2:32.4 in the 800 meters this year, and the senior class record of 6:06.1 in the 1600 meters.

Amelia McCoy set three junior class records this year — 2:34.8 (800 meters), 5:49.9 (1600 meters) and 12:23.1 (3200 meters). The times in the 800 and 1600 were also school records.

Koehl inked a cross country/track scholarship with Tennessee Tech during the national signing period in February.

She has the eighth all-time record in the 1600 meters (6:16.3) and seventh all-time mark in the 3200 meters (13:29.1).

Shulley has the eighth all-time record in the 800 meters (2:39.6), while Ports has the freshman and second all-time mark in the 3200 meters (12:59.10), fifth all-time mark in the 1600 meters (6:00.4) and second all-time and freshman record in the 400 meters (1:02.2).

Katherine Scarborough was the Most Improved runner.

David Qualls was named MVP. He had a high jump of 5'10", which ties for third all-time, fourth all-time mark of 52.3 in the 400 meters and a seventh all-time best triple jump of 37'8.5," a third all-time mark of 23.3 in the 200 meters and a jump of 19'10" in the long jump.

"He is a tremendous athlete," said Coach DeLorenzo. "The 4x800 will be awesome with him (next year)."

All Sub-Region honors went to Drew DeLorenzo, Cory King, Forrest Longway, T.J. Noel, Matt Pennycuff, Kyle Pritchard, David Qualls and Spencer Rogers, while Drew DeLorenzo, Forrest Longway, Matt Pennycuff, Kyle Pritchard and David Qualls earned All-Region.

"I want to thank Richard Wade, Louie DeLorenzo and Pat Koehl for their helping me so much this year. They made my day every day," said Heady, who want be returning next season as head coach. "I'll miss you."
