County elementary golf team wins at Lake Tansi

The Cumberland County elementary golf team fired a 352 total to win the Mid-State Golf Classic at Lake Tansi Monday.

Cumberland County competed against 10 other teams from the Middle Tennessee area. Avery Trace from Cookeville was runner-up with a 364, with third place going to White County Middle School (371), Macon County fourth (391) and Jackson County fifth (399).

Cumberland County golfers who finished in the top 10 were Tayler Houston third with an 84 and Jonathan Masters fourth (86). Spencer Scarbrough and Jake Dailey tied for eighth with 91s. Logan Stewart finished tied for 23rd with a 100.

In the girls' division, Logan Cass competed as an individual, tying for fourth with a 49, behind Avery Trace's Kayla Hoffman (38) and White County's Allison Geer (39).

Avery Trace won the girls' division with an 83, followed by White County (99), Macon County (101), DeKalb County (107) and Cornerstone (115).

There were 54 boys and 25 girls competing.

"What a way to finish your season. I am so proud of all of the team members. We set a goal at the start of the season to win the region tournament. We knew Avery Trace and White County would be our biggest challenges. I reminded our team weekly about our goal and used that to motivate them to practice. Hosting this tournament gave us the advantage, but we still had to shoot the score. This was one of the sweetest team wins that we have had. What a group of kids," said Coach Randy Herring.

The boys finished 28-3.

Once again, the tournament was a success. Cumberland County was able to provide all of the participants with a first class tournament experience.

Herring would like to thank Aubrey King and Lake Tansi for the use of the course. He would also like to thank Billy Loggins, the city of Crossville, Luann Burk and Kelly Shepherd at Big Boys Barbecue.

A special thanks goes out to Eddie Liskovec and all of the volunteers who helped make the tournament a success.

"Thank you, again, to all of the people in our county for promoting junior golf," concluded Herring.

Jonathan Masters shot a one-over par 73 to claim medalist honors at the Panther Classic recently at Ironwood Country Club, helping the Cumberland County elementary boys team finish second in the tournament.

White County finished first with a 343, while Cumberland County shot a 346.

"Jonathan was really on his game at Ironwood. He shot an outstanding round. We should have won the team title, but we got pencil whipped," said Coach Randy Herring.

Other Cumberland County scores were Tayler Houston (89), fifth place; Spencer Scarbrough (92), 12th place; Logan Stewart (93), tie for 13th; Jake Dailey (93), tie for 13th; and Robby Myers (89), tie for fifth.

Logan Cass finished second in the girls' division with a 51.
