Jets baseball team finishes off 9-23 season with tourney thud

The Cumberland County High School Jets concluded the 2008 season with a 9-23 overall record, after dropping both games in the District 5AAA Tournament last week.

CCHS was beaten 14-2 last Thursday in the opening round of the tournament at Cleveland High School, and lost Sunday afternoon 9-5 to the Raiders in the loser's bracket semi-finals.

McMinn County 14, CCHS 2: Tanner Quirk was three for three with two RBIs was the batting star for the Cherokees,, while Case Robert and Bailey Turner each had two hits.

Heather Comerford and Adam Powers hurled for McMinn County, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Daniel Forte cracked two hits for the Jets, while Cody Davenport, Bryan Woodlief and Derrek Hankins had one hit apiece.

Shawn Scott and Davenport hurled for the Jets, giving up 14 runs on 14 hits with four walks.

The Jets scored once in the second inning on singles by Forte, Woodlief and Hankins, a walk and a fielder's choice.

The other run score in the fourth inning on a single by Forte and two fielder's choices.

McMinn County scored three times in the first inning, including a two-run homer by Turner, after a single by Will Mathews. The other run came after a Comerford double, an error and a single by Quirk.

Roberts had an RBI single in the second.

A six-run third inning made the score 10-1, including a leadoff dinger by Comerford.

The other runs came on singles by Andrew Smith and Turner, a double by Quirk, a walk, a fielder's choice and an error.

McMinn County wrapped up the game with a four spot in the fourth on a single by Quirk, doubles by Brackton Smith and Mathews and two walks.

Cleveland 9, CCHS 5: Brandon Rader was the winning pitcher, allowing five runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

The Raiders scored three runs in the first, two in the second, two in the third and two in the fourth, while the Jets scored two in the top of the fourth and three in the top of the seventh.

Brian Woodlief was the losing pitcher, allowing nine runs on nine hits.
