Jets baseball pounded on senior night

By Ed Greif / sports@crossville-chronicle.com

The Cumberland County High School Jets baseball team dropped a 15-7 decision to the Monterey Wildcats Monday afternoon on senior night.

Seniors Cameron Pritchard and Tyler Sherrill were honored in pre-game ceremonies, before their teammates took to the field to face their visitors from Putnam County.

Sherrill and Matt Jones were also recognized as All-District 5AAA selections.

Monterey collected 15 runs on 19 hits off Jet starter Brad Wyatt and reliever Cody Davenport. Leading the barage with three hits and three RBIs was Tim Coggsdale, who was joined by pitcher Cody Cantrell with three hits and two RBIs and Josh Cloyd with three hits.

Cody Mathews, Dustin Ward, Andrew Phillips and Trent McCormick each smacked two hits.

Cantrell allowed seven runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Sherrill had three singles with five stolen bases for the Jets (8-20), while Matt Jones singled and doubled with one RBI and one stolen base, and Wyatt had a single and double with two RBIs.

CCHS would steal a run in the bottom of first inning, as Sherrill and Wyatt both singled. Sherrill went to third on Wyatt's single, and stole home a double steal attempt. Wyatt stayed in a rundown between first and second long enough for Sherrill to race home.

Monterey would take a 4-1 lead in the top of the second on singles by Coggsdale, Phillips, McCormick and Cantrell and a double by Josh Wilson.

CCHS sliced the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the third on doubles by Jones and Wyatt, a fielder's choice and a couple of stolen bases.

Monterey scored an unearned run in the fourth inning on an error, a wild pitch, a walk and a single by Cantrell. McCormick, who reached on the errror, scored on Cantrell's single, but Josh Wilson, who walked, was gunned down at third on a throw from Josh Sanders to Davenport to Koby Wilson to Davenport for the second out.

Cloyd followed with a single to center, but Sherrill rifled a strike to Davenport to get Cantrell trying to advance on the Cloyd's single.

CCHS came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth on singles by Hankins and Jones, a wild pitch, a sacrifice, a passed ball and an error to slice the lead to 5-4.

Monterey plated five runs in the fifth on singles by Mathews, Dustin Ward, Coggsdale and Phillips, a double by McCormick, a passed ball and an error to give the Wildcats a 10-4 advantage.

CCHS sliced the lead to 10-6 in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Sherrill, a two fielder's choices, a stolen base, a walk and a passed ball on a third strike.

Monterey sent nine hitters to bat in the sixth to score four runs on a double by Mathews, singles by Coggsdale and Josh Johnson, two fielder's choices and a walk for a 14-6 lead.

The Wildcats added one run in the seventh off Davenport on a single by Cloyd and an error for a 15-6 lead.

CCHS tallied one run in the seventh on a single by Sherrill, two stolen bases, a groundout, an error and a passed ball.

The Jets hosted Harriman Tuesday evening and will host Clinton tonight in a make-up game.
