Jets held scoreless in intra-county defeat to Stone
By Ed Greif / sports@crossville-chronicle.com
After sweeping a pair of games with Livingston, the Cumberland County High School Jets baseball team dropped a 4-0 decision to crosstown rival, Stone Memorial High School, Friday evening.
It was CCHS' Brian Woodlief against SMHS' Jeff Wooll, with the Panther hurler coming out on top.
Wooll held the Jets scoreless on five hits with seven strikeouts and zero walks. Taylor Kisers singled twice with an RBI, while Justin Patton tripled. Luke Trivett and Cole Stickler each cracked one hit.
"Jeff pitched a heck of a game. He threw two pitches which he wishes he had back. We played good defense and got the big hits behind Jeff," said SMHS Coach Scott Calahan.
Woodlief allowed four runs on six hits with six Ks and one walk. Josh Sanders and Tyler Sherrill each poked two hits.
"Brian threw well," said CCHS Coach Dave Prichard. "The defense played well."
Wooll retired the first eight Jet hitters, before Shawn Scott reached on an error and stole second.
Sanders singled with two out in the second for the Jets, and Shawn Scott reached on an error and stole second in the third inning. Both runners were stranded.
Sherrill singled with one out in the fourth and stole second, but he, too, was stranded at second.
With two out in the sixth, Cody Davenport and Sherrill ripped back-to-back singles, but were also stranded.
Sanders singled with one out in the seventh, but was forced out at second on Daniel Forte's grounder to Panther second baseman Devon Pennington.
After retiring the first three Panthers, Woodlief allowed two runs in the second on a singles by Kiser and Trivett, two fielder's choices, a wild pitch and a ground out by Pennington.
Kiser's RBI single plated Jon Doran in the third inning. Wooll also singled for the Panthers.
After giving up Kiser's two-single, Woodlief retired the next seven Panthers, before Patton drilled a leadoff triple in the sixth. Patton would score on Trivett's sacrifice fly for a 4-0 advantage.
Stickler singled with two out, but was picked off trying to swipe second base.
Woodlief retired the side in order in the seventh.
Schedule: Both teams complete their respective district schedules this week.
The Panthers hosted District 4AA foe Scott County Monday and travel to Scott County today for a 5 p.m. contest. They will host District 5AAA member Rhea County Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
After traveling to Cleveland for a District 5AAA game Monday, the Jets will host Cleveland tonight at 6, followed by a trip to East Tennessee for three games — at Jefferson County Thursday at 4 p.m.; at Cocke County Friday and at Sevier County Saturday at 1 p.m.
CCHS sweeps Livingston
The Jets swept a home-and-home series with the Livingston Wildcats, winning 12-10 at Livingston on April 16 in a make-up game and taking an 11-8 contest at Jet Park on April 17.
Jets 12, Wildcats 10: Matt Jones ripped four singles and a double with three RBIs to lead the Jets over the hosts. Both Tyler Sherrill and Josh Sanders were two for four with two RBIs.
Brad Wyatt was tripled in three plate appearances, while Koby Wilson had an RBI.
Shawn Scott was the winning pitcher, allowing seven runs on six hits with two walks.
Jets 11, Wildcats 8: Wyatt hurled a complete game, allowing eight runs on eight hits with five strikeouts at Jet Park, giving the Jets their sixth win of the season.
Sherrill was two for four with two RBIs, while Brian Woodlief was two for three with an RBI. Jones was one for four.
CCHS scored in every inning — two in the first, four in the second, two in the third and one each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Schedule: After traveling to Cleveland Monday, the Jets will host the Raiders in their final District 5AAA contest and will head east to face Jefferson County on April 24, Cocke County on April 25 and Sevier County on April 26.
They close out the regular season at home — April 28 against Monterey, April 29 against Clinton in a make-up game and April 30 against Harriman.
