  • ROCKY TOP BEAT: Football news is trickling out of UT at a snail's pace
    Football news keeps trickling out of UT at a snail's pace. I guess that explains the erroneous reports about Eric Berry’s 13-year-old brother, Evan, “committing" to the Vols. The youth said he was committed to Tennessee (as a fan) at this point in his life which was turned into an “early commitment” to play for the Vols. I am sure that Eric and the coaches at UT had a grin over that one when it found its way onto ESPN.

  • Crossville Thunder selling fireworks to help pay for national tournament bid
    Crossville Thunder, a local girls’ travel basketball program, is operating a fireworks tent at the Cumberland Plaza on Main Street in Crossville (across from Krystal/Baskin Robbins) in an effort to raise money to pay for a recent bid they received to play in the AAU National Tournament in Hampton, VA, later this month.

  • MCMX resets fifth round of Back 40 Series to July 25-26
    The Back 40 Series Round 5 which was canceled due to heavy rains back in May at Meadow Creek Motocross has been rescheduled for July 25-26.

  • Honeycutt catches first fish
    Chloe Honeycutt, four-year-old daughter of Anna and Clayton Honeycutt, started her fishing adventure out just right.

  • Forty-two new faces are in Women's State Open tournament field
    There will be 42 new faces in the Golf Capital of Tennessee Women's State Open, which tees off Thursday-Saturday, July 16-18, at the Stonehenge Golf Course. As of Tuesday morning, 78 ladies (49 amateurs and 29 pros) have registered for the tournament, with the pro-am on July 15.

  • Registration under way for Lady Panther hoop camp
    Registration is under way for Coach Tim Smith's Lady Panther Basketball Camp on July 13-16 at Stone Memorial High School.

  • MCMX resets fifth round of Back 40 Series to July 25-26
    The Back 40 Series Round 5 which was cancelled due to heavy rains back in May at Meadow Creek Motocross has been rescheduled for July 25-26.
    The balance of the Back 40 Series will go as follows: July 4-5, July 18-19 and July 25-26.

  • Five SMHS Panthers named to the 2009 All-District 4AA Soccer Team
    The Stone Memorial High School Panthers soccer team ended their best season ever with a 10-3-3 record in May. Five (5) members of this outstanding team were recently named to the All District 4AA teams.

  • L.A. Fox Tennis Classic under way at CCHS
    The 41st L. A. Fox Tennis Classic is under way through Saturday at the Cumberland County High School courts.

  • Crossville Blues wins 11U AA substate baseball tournament
    The Crossville Blues travel baseball team recently won in the USSSA 11U AA  Sub State tournament held in Knoxville, June 19-21. The win secured an automatic invitation to the state tournament June 26-28.

  • Mountain Punt, Pass, Kick winners announced
    The Mountaineer pass competition winners in the 11-12 year-old division were, from left, Chase Eichner, first place; Matthew Winningham, second place; and Will Widemon, third place. The PPK competition was held on Saturday, June 13, at Jet Stadium.

    Here we are just a few days from the official start of summer but more importantly only 78 days until it is “football time in Tennessee." Well, at least we are within three months and the summertime distractions of vacations and other activities will help ease the pain of another few months without Vol football.

  • Field for women's state open continues to increase
    The field for the Golf Capital of Tennessee Women's State Open at Stonehenge Golf Club continues to increase. As of Monday morning, 57 ladies (41 amateurs and 16 pros) have registered for the tournament, which is slated July 16-18, with the pro-am on July 15. Of those 57, 28 were entered last year; however, none of the last year's top 18 have registered.

  • Deadline to enter the 41st L.A. Fox Tennis Classic is June 22
    The deadline to enter the 41st L.A. Fox Tennis Classic is noon, Monday, June 22. The annual tournament will be Thursday-Sunday, June 25-28, at Cumberland County High School.

  • OH GOOD GREIF: County loses two gems in Sam Hicks, John Dishman
    Cumberland County lost two gems recently - Sam Hicks and John Dishman. Sam was a longtime golf professional at Lake Tansi and Dripping Springs (now Cumberland Cove), while John was a longtime deputy with the Cumberland County sheriff's department and worked for awhile with the Crossville Police Department.

  • Jet 15U team finishes second in summer bash
    The 15U Jets baseball team finished second in the Lenoir City Summer Bash, June 5-7. They finished with a 3-2 record, losing to North Georgia 12-2 in the championship game.

  • County golfers continue TGA Junior Tour play
    Cumberland County's junior golfers continued playing in the TGA Junior Tour over the past week.

  • Korths defend TPGA Father and Son Championship
    Paul and Wes Korth of Cookeville defended their TPGA Father-Son championship at the 30th annual tournament played over the weekend at Stonehenge Golf Course. The two-time champions (2005 and 2008) trailed Brentwood's Ed and Brad Stevens (74 points) and Ed and Jim Stevens (70 points) with 69 points, but posted 81 points on Sunday, which was a single day point total, according to Todd Havron of the TPGA.

  • Local softball players win championship
    Kelly Walker (left) and Lauren Mathews helped the Knoxville Blaze fastpitch softball team take the first place hardware at the ASA June Jam in Crossville. The Blaze went undefeated Sunday and captured the top spot.

  • Scorecard playoffs determine winners of the City of Crossville Golf Tournament
    Scorecard playoffs were the determining factor in the 2009 City of Crossville Golf Tournament played Wednesday, June 10, at Lake Tansi. Gary and Tersa Lively, Tim Jones and Travis Dixon won a scorecard playoff for first place in the first flight, while Earnie Brown, Brett Elmore, Dusty Norrod and Frank Barnwell would take second over Everett Cook, Michael Peters, Ed DeMars and Joe Maxwell. All three teams finished at 13-under par 59.

  • PHOTO GALLERY: 212 kids haul in 342 pounds of fish
    Two hundred twelve children participated in this year's ninth annual Kid's Fishing Derby. The overall total catch weighed in at 342.98 pounds of catfish, which is over one-third of the 1,000 pounds of catfish stocked by TWRA at Meadow Park Lake prior to Saturday's event

  • CCHS football booster club golf tournament set June 27
    The Cumberland County High School football booster club will host its annual golf tournament on Saturday, June 27, at 1 p.m. at the Lake Tansi Golf Course. The entry fee for the four-person scramble will be $65 per person or $260 per team. Entry is limited to the first 30-paid teams, and there will be a total purse of $1,800.

  • 41st L.A. Fox Tennis Classic begins June 25 on CCHS courts
    The 41st L.A. Fox Tennis Classic will be Thursday-Sunday, June 25-28, at Cumberland County High School. The classic is sponsored by the tournament committee, Cumberland County Bank and Dairy Queen of Crossville.

  • CCHS track and field athletes receive awards for 2009 season
    The Cumberland County High School track and field team gathered at Cumberland Mountain State Park's recreation hall last Wednesday evening to receive their awards for the 2009 season. "I appreciate every one who came tonight," said Assistant Coach Louie DeLorenzo. "I know we got five kids to the state and an army to the sectionals. I am excited about our three freshmen."

  • North Cumberland Elementary does well in cross country
    North Cumberland Elementary School participated for the first time this year in the Cumberland County High School Junior Cross Country League. Over 50 students participated in the league and were recognized recently. The junior varsity girls placed second in the competition. From left are, back row, Coach Regina Davenport, Coach Jennifer Kerley and Coach LaRue-Garrett; second row, Haley Coudriet and Sadie Hoover; and front row, Katie Coudriet, Kimberley Wooll, Emery Smith, Sydney Tabor, Lauren Tabor, Marce Kerley, Nikita Delk and Serena Nastri.
