Crossville observes MLK Day with fair, prayer service

CROSSVILLE — Diversity and service were the themes of a volunteer fair and a non-denominational prayer service Monday evening as Crossvillians came together to observe Martin Luther King Day at the Palace Theatre.

Titled "A Prayer Service for Racial Justice," the prayer service included audience participation in music and responses, a video of King's Aug. 28, 1963 "I have a dream" speech and prayers. Over 100 people attended the event.

The Cumberland County Playhouse's Children's Gospel Choir, organized for the occasion and led by Michael Ruff, performed, as did the adults in the Festival Choir of Fairfield Glade.

Worship leaders came from all parts of Cumberland County and included Jack Smith of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the Rev. Tom Warren of the Pleasant Hill Community Church United Church of Christ, the Rev. Dr. Marvin Morgan of Fairfield Glade Community Church and Luis Medina Solis.

The volunteer fair preceded the prayer service and featured nonprofit organizations that are always looking for supporters and volunteers. There were 13 community service organizations signed up and included the Adult Reading Council, Avalon, Baptist Association Counseling Ministry, Christian Women Job Corps, Crossville Solidarity Action (CPAS), Cumberland Climate Action Team, Habitat for Humanity, Kids on the Rise, Hospice, Obed Watershed Community Association, Red Cross and Save Our Cumberland Mountains (SOCM).

Informational handouts were available as were snacks for those in attendance.

All of the above organizations are looking for volunteers who wish to donate their time and talents in service to others in the spirit exemplified by Dr. Martin Luther King.
