Incumbents fare well in light turnout county primary


A light turnout did not hurt incumbent office holders in Cumberland County Tuesday with unofficially about 2,700 voters casting ballots in the Republican County Primary and 2,800 voters casting ballots in the Democratic Primary.

No problems were reported during the election which ran smoothly, according to election commission officials, and unofficial totals were available by 8:10 p.m. Tuesday.

Persons wishing to vote in the Aug. 3 County General Election and State Primary Election must register to vote before July 3. Early voting will be held July 14-29, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. week days and 8 a.m. until noon on Saturdays.

The results, which have not been certified by the election commission, are as follows:

•Criminal Court Judge 13th Judicial District Part 1-D, Democrat John Turnbull, 2,001.

•Circuit Court Judge 13th Judicial District Part II-D, Democrat John Maddux, 1,978.

•Chancellor 13th Judicial District-D, Democrat Ronald Thurman, 1,801.

•Criminal Court Judge 13th Judicial District Part 1-D, Democrat Leon Burns Jr., 1,996.

•Criminal Court Judge 13th Judicial District Part II-D, Democrats Lillie Ann Sells, 1,403; Edwin G. Sadler, 1,030.

•District Attorney General 13th Judicial District, Democrat William E. (Bill) Gibson, 1,979.

•Public Defender 13th Judicial District-D, Democrat David N. Brady, 1,843.

•County Mayor, Democrat Mike Turner, 2,480. Republican, Brock Hill, 2,066; Patrick Dean, 731.

•County Trustee, Republican Carolyn Turner, 2,681.

•General Sessions Judge, Democrat Steven C. Douglas, 1,745. Republican Larry M. Warner, 2,469.

•Sheriff, Democrats Gene Hall, 1,635; Ronny Marquess, 216; and Rodney Reed, 951. Republicans, Eucle (Butch) Burgess, 2,335; James Williams, 439.

•Circuit Court Clerk, Democrat Larry V. Sherrill, 2,741.
